Are you a coin collector?

If so, do your coin collecting interests overlap with your wargaming interests?

I have a few late Roman coins picked up at a building site for the Olympics.Valueless bronze ones of Constantius II A& Constans.
The foreman told me to pick them up & keep quiet as he didn't want any interruptions to the work.
I don't game late Romans or Arthurian Britain.

I have a few coins, but not really a coin collector. Collecting is mostly hobby related; maps, postcards, stereo cards, photos, other paper, and military hardware (limited to small items, helmets, bayonets, light tanks, etc).

My sister has the civil war era coins that have filtered down through the family. There is rumor of revolutionary era coins, but she has never shown them to me.

I collect pennies from everywhere. They become bases for my 25mm, which are then mounted on washers.

I have two Byzantine copper coins to go with my Byzantine army.
I also picked up a set of Euro coins with the Greek pictures since I have Greek units for 1897 and 1940-41.

I have a bag of foreign coins and currency that I've picked up through my travels and finding things in my change. I never could collect American coins – I kept spending them.

Only the ones I used to find when metal detecting around Ontario Canada. Earliest was from 1812.

I 'collect' any coins I spot lying on the street, save them up and then spend them on wargame books or figures.

I had my father's collection which I sold to throw a 50th birthday bash for my wife.

I have a small collection. I used to collect coins that were directly related to what I was interested in gaming. Then we bought a house and there was no free flow of money, any longer.
But, lately, I've thought about getting back into it.

Not only am I a coin collector, but I'm also a former chairman of a numismatic society.

I'm not as serious as I used to be, though I still check my change for Euro coins for countries/dates/mintmarks/special issues I don't have yet.

My core collection of Chinese provincials has been undisturbed for years.

Absolutely unrelated to my wargaming interests.

I collect 2p coins as bases for 28mm figures I use singly. And one Eurocent pieces for 15mm figures.

Perfectly round, they stick to nicely magnetic sheet and they're considerably cheaper than laser cut woodden or MDF bases.

What more could you want in a circular base?

I've got Mom's collection, which is mostly special
coins or related in some way to family events.

I have a very few of my own, but not related to gaming.

Altius14 Feb 2012 8:51 a.m. PST

Not really. Not in the traditional sense. But every time I travel to a different country, I take whatever foreign currency is left in my pocket and toss it into a jar in my bedroom. I've got about 9 different nationalities of coin all mixed up in that jar right now.

Nope. Not a chance.

I bought a coin of Julian the Apostate, right after
I read the book by Gore Vidal.
It's an ugly black lump.
I think that the dealer just reached for something in the "Sucker!" bin when I asked for it. grin

I used to be a coin collector, silver coins were my main interest. I collected silver coins from the Roman Republic to early 20th. century. I was very interested in "trade coins", silver pieces minted in one country to be used in other like the English Trade Dollar or the Mexican Republican "Ocho Reales" used in China, Japan and most of Asia.
I left coin collecting some 10 years ago and now I am only focused in wargames.

Had an aluminum franc from the German occupation.

And a very rare coin from the Allied occupation of Koblenz, post WWI.

So they overlap as far as general areas of interest.
