What color works best? * white * black * grey * I don't bother with primer * I don't paint 6mm infantry |

Depends on base colour of miniature I use white for uniforms that are "bright" for example any variations of red yellow light blues etc. Examples would be British "Redcoats", Roman reds greek hoplites, persian infantry etc Recently I have been working on a lot of 6mm ACW and I use black as the colours are not "bright" |

Infantry in white. (Buildings in brown.) |

Grey. Best compromise for this scale imo. |

Grey followed by a black ink wash. White and black both have the same issue for me, even with a wash or drybrush – the details are not obvious enough. Grey gives some contrast even without a wash and the wash enhances it. |

No priming most of the time. When I do prime them it is with black. |

What ever comes out of the cupboard first! Find I tend to grey (Halford primer) for most things now as it coats well and is often on sale. |

White. Black makes the colours too dingy and in the smaller sizes you need as much lightness as you can get. |

Generally black, for twentieth century and modern types I usually just do them in the base uniform colour though. |

Black. I spot paint so I use black as a color separator, not just a primer. You can see it in this close-up how black separates between the flesh color of the hand and the white of the trousers.
(Yeah, close-ups of 6mm are ugly because you can see much more than the naked eye.) Dale |

Yeah, close-ups of 6mm are ugly because you can see much more than the naked eye. I would say that is not the case at all I think this is not ugly and I have seen MUCH better.
He was undercoated in white by the way. Michael.

When I painted my AWI forces (both British and Americans) I used Grey |

I undercoat in grey using Mr Surfacer 1200. Lighter undercoats makes the colours a bit brighter and grey seems a good compromise. Cheers Kieran |

I use black and take a similar approach to Dale in painting, I use the black in the recessed areas as shading to enhance the features of the models. I think 6mm benefits from darker shading. But Michael's model is gorgeous. |

Depend on how you plan to paint 'em. For brighter colours and if using magic-wash etc
then go white. Otherwise black. Grey just show an inability to make a decision |
earthad | 14 Feb 2012 6:55 a.m. PST |
white for most, black for some |
Elenderil | 29 Mar 2012 11:49 a.m. PST |
Mainly white. I keep trying black but I find it makes colours too dull. I don't spot paint as such so I don't need the black as a separator. |

I have not yet painted any 6 mm infantry, but will use Testor's Spray Enamel in (iirc) Olive Drab as the primer / basecoat for first go at some 1973 IDF infantry. |

Traditionally used black, recently been using grey with black wash as you have the shade but also colours are more vivid painted from the grey. Not much to gain from white and then black wash as it turns grey. Other than that some specific troops I am beginning to use different coloured primers – such as armypainter ultramarine blue for Union ACW. Pop a black wash on that and a light dry brush and your coats and caps are already done for you. I continue to experiment with primers so my tune may change with time

I have used all 3 with success. I prefer grey. |
