Seems like a couple of guys at the Lead Adventure Forum are really making great strides in their The Thing projects.

A lot of cool and inspiring stuff:

I'm sure there must be more threads like it in their archives.

Anyone here made any headway with their project?

Guys,

Check out the "Outpost 31" buildings this fella is planning to make:

What do you think? Looks like he has the right idea to me.

Most of those buildings look easy to laser cut from MDF.

did they ever explain why mac had his own shack at the base?

Did anyone ever come up with a good solution to how to model the body-snatching mechanic in game? I'm thinking this scenario could make for a wildly popular convention game, if done right.

My initial thought would be for there to be a referee who manages which models belong to which side, and would keep track of who is a Thing and who is not, at least until a model erupts into a thing-beast.

The best model I can think of for this mechanic is the 1982 TSR minigame "They've Invaded Pleasantville." In it, both players (the 'alien' and the 'human' player) take turns moving the townspeople around. The alien player knows who is and is not taken, but can only move townspeople until a townsperson is revealed to be 'under the influence.' The Human player can not only move townspeople but also have them attack, throw switches, et cetera, but if he tries to do this with a hidden Alien character, the Alien can order him to stop (thus revealing the Alien, of course).

Maybe I'll type something up along those lines. Damn now I want to start building snow-cvovered quonset huts in 28mm.

A clever person could adapt and incorporate the rules from "The Resistance" link into another simple set of miniatures / light RPG rules, like Savage Worlds. The Resistance is a party game, not a miniatures game, so it would take some work to combine them into a coherent system, but it's a lot of fun in its own right, and great for creating an atmosphere of paranoia.
You could set up a scenario that requires smaller groups of players to venture out into the cold, separate from the rest, so that the alien has a chance to kill and replace the humans, so they are constantly kept guessing who is human and who is not.

I want to build an Ice Station for the campaign I'm working on.

Some cool structure ideas here.

I'm also interested in those Khurasan Antarctic Explorers with Weapons.

Still available? I believe the site is on hiatus for a bit.

Khurasan shuts down time from time, as a one man operations he is and waiting to repoen is well worth the wait, give more time to rack up you list :D

Grommet37: "I want to build an Ice Station for the campaign I'm working on."

Were you thinking along the lines of the ones in the two films? Or were you thinking of something a little more modern?

Here's that cool Princess Elisabeth station:

The Halley VI station is neat too, though smaller:

I seem to remember one of the free D20 Modern adventures being set in the arctic or antarctic, can't remember which. It might have a few maps and ideas you could utilize if you didn't want to go with the movie as your location.

I think it was Adelie 13 or something like that.

Dan,

Those are both awesome. Actually, I was probably more influenced by Ice Station Zebra (what I remember of the movie) or Ice Station – Impossible! (from the Venture Bros. episode).

My original inspiration came when I was originally conceiving my Polar Knights campaign in 54mm. My plan was to hack something together out of Airfix/Marx pillboxes and bunkers, and have most of the station "underground" (that is, hidden and non-existent under the playing surface). I was going to try my hand at ice and snow as the terrain, and have the pillboxes and bunkers accessible for cover.

Not exactly sure what I have in mind anymore, now that I've scaled down to 15mm, but this thread is certainly full of inspiration. Now I need to watch "The Thing" and "Ice Station Zebra" again.

Thanks for the great suggestions and ideas. Something like a scaled-down Major Matt Mason playset might just be the thing.

The Thing!

After looking at some various supplier's website, I might just go with a variety of bunkers, turrets and shipping container hovels for the Ice Station. I'm partial to Tim's Terrain over at the Combat Wombat site, GameCraft's Tomorrow's War Structures for the Humans, and the bunkers from Brigade.

A few of each of these, and I'd have at least one locale somewhat ready for play.

G,

Please let us know what you end up with. And take pics, please.

Thanks,
