I would think Rapid fire could be an alternative. The whole key is what you want different from FOW. Scope is an interesting issue. Most above company level games are realy not that. Supposed battalion level battles ignore the fact that actually most of a battalion does not fight. It needs copious amounts of stores. In reality one platoon will only be able to take say few hoses. If you are having a gun line on table then you are representing several kilometer of battlefield. That means any on table house will represent a significant commitmment in time maybe a day to take. Most battalion games ignore this.

FOW as far as I can see is a fun game. Its connection to reallity is to say the least tenious.

The key is what do you want? Reality which is "fun" but like chess is demanding and instructive, or fun just deciding on a new army and fighting over tactically undemanding terrain. There is no right or wrong just what you want.
