What do you consider the most nasty or distasteful component of the miniature wargaming hobby?

(Personally, I have a strong dislike for two-part epoxy… and paint strippers.)

Mick A07 Feb 2012 9:59 a.m. PST

People who take games to seriously….

Mick

Willtij07 Feb 2012 10:02 a.m. PST

Not in every case, but it can get expensive.

I'll also second people taking games too seriously.

Chortle Fezian07 Feb 2012 10:02 a.m. PST

Parts that are difficult to superglue. I beeped all fingers and thumbs with the stuff trying to glue on a Pz IV turret skirt.

corporalpat07 Feb 2012 10:07 a.m. PST

Super glue, epoxy, spray paint, and rules lawyers (not necessarily in that order).

Assembly of metal models with superglue, greenstuff and pins.

and people who argue endlessly about 'realism', but seem unable to define what realism is

On my table I would say paint brush water – I hate the look of the grey/brown gunk that needs cleaning out of the pot when I put fresh water in it.

Outside the room has to be the stink of some folk at shows. I've been ill since Saturday and still smell better – come on folks you do not dissolve if you get wet!!!!

Drilling out hands to attach weapons. I hate that very much!

Unfortunately it's usually the players.

Not all of them, mind you, but those few who make it unfun for the rest of us.

Much like smut, I know it when I see it.

morrigan07 Feb 2012 10:35 a.m. PST

People. People are pretty much the nastiest part of anything.

People that complain about your game/event/paint jobs but never run/provide their own.

Inkpaduta07 Feb 2012 11:26 a.m. PST

Having to glue parts together. Man, I hate that!

Dynaman878907 Feb 2012 11:34 a.m. PST

People who say it's just a game when defending bad rules (not easier/ less complex rules, just bad).

filing and snipping lead, I hate that.

Steve07 Feb 2012 11:37 a.m. PST

Putting away the figs and terrain. I used to say playing with jerks, but I don't generally play with people I don't know any more.

ming3107 Feb 2012 11:37 a.m. PST

zip kicker …that stuff stinks

DeanMoto07 Feb 2012 11:38 a.m. PST

Taking things too seriously.

wrgmr107 Feb 2012 11:39 a.m. PST

1. Prepping figures, including drilling hands.
2. People who complain about the game or gamers.
3. Gamers at conventions who stay in a hotel with a shower and never use it.

Weird WWII07 Feb 2012 11:42 a.m. PST

Painting.

Mold lines that cross the face of a figure.

Multi-part figures that do not have enough material to drill and pin said parts together so they can be used in an actual game.

People who take games far too seriously.

Any toxic or garbage part of the process (packaging, some of the chemicals we use, etc.).

Jerk players.

PiersBrand07 Feb 2012 11:50 a.m. PST

Some of the people in the hobby.

Some seriously nasty characters around…

Steve6407 Feb 2012 11:51 a.m. PST

Having your coffee cup too close to your washup water.

I haven't fallen for it yet, but its only a matter of time.

Stripping the paint from figures.

Steve W07 Feb 2012 12:21 p.m. PST

Somebody told me that at conventions in the USA you can buy SS unit tee shirts…not sure if this is the same in UK or Europe. If you can buy them then I reckon that's a bit tasteless

Grizzlymc07 Feb 2012 12:28 p.m. PST

wrgmr1 has it to the Nth place.

74EFS Intel07 Feb 2012 12:41 p.m. PST

Without a doubt it's the 'crack' problem at conventions. Wargamers should be forced to wear suspenders (braces) to keep their pants up and frock coats in case their suspenders (braces) fail.

Eclectic Wave07 Feb 2012 12:44 p.m. PST

Lack of personal hygiene. Especially people who don't wash after using the toilet. Doubly especially if we have to share dice or cards at the table.

redmist112207 Feb 2012 1:11 p.m. PST

When I load up a new #11 blade in my hobby knife and cut myself working on my figures…don't know why, but happens everytime…I do the same work with a dull & broken blades…no issues…as soon as I put a fresh blade in…here is comes!

Filing mold lines off of lead figures. All that Pb dust hast to go somewhere. Same goes for resins.

After a long time without even thinking about it, I'm really starting to hate stripping miniatures in Pine Sol.

I have switched to Simple Green, but it seems to be less effective than ol' Piney. Still, my fingernails don't reek of it for 2 days afterwards.

1. cleaning, prepping and priming figures
2. painting the hosiery (stockings) on Highlanders
3. any rules that require me to roll a natural "6" on a D6 to have any success in a wargame.(that means you In The Grand Manner)
4. having to base 400 figures several days before you need them for a convention game – won't I ever learn?
