I just got the excellent 28mm scale U Boat from Brigade Games (Happy Zardoz Day Lon) and I want to paint it well. Can anyone make any specific suggestions besides grey?

Grey and rust.

White Ensign do very good WWII naval paints and in their Kriegsmarine section are two specifically for U-Boats

There are a great many patterns to look at, but most use some aspect of grey. I purchased the same model and did mine in some North Atlantic colors – a medium grey and a grey/white. This was one of the best resources I found: PDF link

In doing research, I also found the model lacking in several details, making it difficult to identify as a particular U-Boat Type. I found the above resource to be very helpful as I kit-bashed and scratch-built a model similar to U-253.

This looks promising:

for my 28mm boats I prefer a light grey with drybrush weathering followed by a subtle rust wash…

Think he means:

KM 11 SCHLICKGRAU 58 (U-Boat)
KM 12 BLAUGRAU 58.1 (Blue-Grey U-Boat)

Was just down to see U-505 in Chicago. No rust. Vessel was thoroughly painted. Just saying. I squeezed some white into a large bottle of gray, then squeezed in a goodly quantity of blue for my U-Boat. Turned out right for me. A bluish gray. Painted a black single digit number on the lower conning tower, then lined it with a white on the left side. Sweet model.
