I think I can already hear the crickets starting to chirp, but here goes. On this thread TMP link several people have indicated that the't like to do this, and I have seen the same suggested on other threads. Considering the popularity of 19th C / VSF it seems like it would be worthwhile. There would have to be some rules to it, such as governing the level of dodgy science or magic allowed, possibly from zero to the sky's the limit, and a few other things as well. Thoughts: Where and What Is It? We could create a website (or yahoo group) with a dedicated map,of maybe a small island somewhere in the Mediterranean. This could have a few small posts on it from some of the major European powers, with, maybe British and French influenced states in the west, Turkish and Balkan influenced states in the north, and African states in the south and east. Anyone who wanted a piece of the map would have to design his country, put up photos of figures, battle reports, etc. Magic and SF? My suggestion would be very little, as I can easily see that turning into an etheric arms race. Probably the best thing would be to keep it to stuff that might be magic / steamtech, but could as easily turn out to be hogwash / fraud. By agreement, some such elements could be let in, like a lost valley full of dinosaurs and giant spiders, for example, or a lord of the jungle that no one is quite sure exists, but it should not become overwhelming. Maybe a few cults that seem to have magic powers, but probably just do a lot with hallucinogens? Another thought might be to let in all the SF and magic desired, but, outside of the country where it is used, it counts only as wild rumor. Players could allow it into their games by agreement, but, if one player does not agree, it does not appear in battles against his forces. Maybe it doesn't exist? Maybe the wizards are busy somewhere else? Who knows? Gaming system? Probably a meaningless question, as very few of us, if any, would live close enough for a live game, however, it might be possible to do such with webcams, etc, and programs like skype. In any case, I'd suggest that any battles would be fought out between the various nations agreeing on a system, whether TSATF, Gaslight, or whatever. Anyway, for those of you interested in finding a home for your 19th c creations, here's your chance. |

+ We have already written a booklet covering one perspective on a VSF 'Mars world' environment. It is titled 'The Moons Never Set Over Mars'. Expanding the concepts to earth would be interesting. I am not a fan of mixing VSF and magic. |

Nice idea
but I think that I will stick with my own 'Imagi-world in 1891' for the time being |

I think the problem is that most people have their own ideas what VSF means to them. For some it is played out on another planet, for some it is in the center of the earth, and for others it is on Earth, but with a few machines or contraptions thrown in. |

Which is fine, and it would require some agreement, but the best imagining is usually done with some parameters. Also, that it would be great do a purely "alternate historical" game, with maybe a little heroics, and hints of magic/tech thrown in, or none at all. |

I would put them on Venus, lotsa room, offshoots of various euro-colonies. |

What about 18th C. SF ('Lacepunk') Imagi-Nations? TMP link TMP link link With respectable precedents such as Cyrano de Bergerac and the good Baron Munchausen, imagine your heroes in tricorne and justaucorps (and heroines) on Barsoom, for instance: YouTube link YouTube link TMP link TMP link TMP link TMP link TMP link TMP link But don't forget link YouTube link YouTube link YouTube link As an aficionado of 'B' to 'Z' SF and 'Sword & sandal' movies since the mid 1950, I'm no prejudiced at all against low-budget movies. And Traci Lords was quite good in 'Profiler' and 'Cry Baby' en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cry-Baby (with excellent 'period' music, btw) and except for the blond hair is as fitting as the Disney actress (and in more Barsoomian' dresses).
Figurines-wise, the Bronze Age and Tin Man are perfect for Red Martians, the Parroom Station link and RAFM ones (<=>Space 1889) can be used for another, less perfectly humanoid, species TMP link but for alternative 'human-looking' ones other possibilities exist: TMP link

I think Traci is getting a bit
vintage? For such stuff. |

Yes, we are all aging
Though some of us are more vintage than her
But the actress chosen for Dejah Thoris by Disney / Pixar does not fit the bill, imho. As for a cute and adequately 'exotic' face, even just one of the 'desperate housewives' (never watched the series, just discovered her on the cover of a TV mag) looks closer to the bill:
(but too
skinny to play the part, admitedly ) |

I have an 1848 Balkan Imagi-nation campaign going, TransSyldavia is fighting for Indpendence from Hungary which is fighting for independence from austria. I also have 3 VSF armies but they are based on Space 1889 precepts – British on Mars, Germans on Venus and She Who Must Be Obeyed. |

Do you have a mini of Ayesha? (hope she is worthy of a cameo in the 'Need more Boobies' board!) |

Ayesha, for your pleasure
(Reaper Miniatures Egyptian Princess – a joy to paint :) ) |
