There have been numerous discussions related to Facebook, but no poll that I know of. So, are you on Facebook? Yes, it transformed my life Yes, but I'm not sure why or what to do with it No, never really thought about it No, it is a solipsistic time-suck If you think we need a "needs more boobies" option, you clearly have never been on Facebook. |
John the OFM | 03 Feb 2012 9:09 a.m. PST |
No, it is a solipsistic time-suck. However, if you could guarantee me some fine boobies, I might change my mind. |

No, I'm not sure why or what I'd do with it |

Nope, I don't care for it for many reasons. Though some FailBook entries are amusing. |

I am on Facebook. It is quite useful as I live in Switzerland but my family is part in England and part in Australia. I also keep in touch with former work collegues from UK. Mick |

No – I have a life Steve J |

It is quite useful as I live in Switzerland but my family is part in England and part in Australia. I/we have a landline, three mobiles, four personal email accounts, a company email account, video conferencing facilities, and, if all else fails, snail mail**. What does Farcebook bring to the party that none of them do? **and a partridge in a pear tree. |

Yes. I'm between "it transformed my life" and "I'm not sure why or what to do with it." As with so many other new things, the kids haver embraced it. Several prefer Facebook messaging to e-mail. My wife & I have found that it is the most practical way to keep up with the kids, particularly the ones in different time zones where it isn't practical to call. (We have kids in Manama, Auckland & Madrid.) Rick |
taskforce58 | 03 Feb 2012 9:28 a.m. PST |
Yes. I spend at most 5-10 min on it every day. I don't do any of the "games" or post every minute details of my life. I might share a link to an interesting picture or video on it once in a while. All the people that are "friends" in my facebook account are actually real friends / relatives that I do like to correspond with. It's a tool, just like any other tool. You use it, you don't let it use you. Just because the majority of teenagers like to post a status update very half hour and think that having a thousand "friend" is cool, doesn't invalidate it's usefulness. |
Mick in Switzerland | 03 Feb 2012 9:30 a.m. PST |
@Connard Sage I also have land lines at home and at work, mobile phones, fax, several computers etc. The reality is that I do pick up the phone to call my parents and my brother but that is about it. I have many other friends, cousins, and other relatives who would not normally be included. Facebook is nice because you can post photographs and general chit chat. Facebook also halps you link in with "lost contacts" via friends of friends. As another poster pointed out – young people like to use Facebook in preference to other communication. Mick |

rmcaras | 03 Feb 2012 9:33 a.m. PST |
yes. it helps me stay in touch with my kids, and the college students I mentor. otherwise, it can be obtrusive and a risk to privacy to use IMO. |

No, but my wife did until recently. She works in IT; tech people are apparently leaving for greener pastures. Not sure about the solipsistic part, I suppose it could turn out that way, surely narcissistic would be the more appropriate term. My wife used it as a sort of techno village pump for keeping up with family and friends. I'm more the old guy on the rocker in front of the hardware store, blowing political and philosophic hot air between expectorations into a handy cuspidor. Technology changes by facilitation, unfortunately that means sometimes making it easier to do things which were better kept difficult. |
Connard Sage | 03 Feb 2012 9:43 a.m. PST |
Facebook is nice because you can post photographs and general chit chat. Facebook also halps you link in with "lost contacts" via friends of friends. I don't stick many personal details on t'web, even if the site is 'invitation only'. I very much doubt you could find an online image of me even if you did know my real name. Business is another matter, but those who do matter know how to find me anyway. Broadly speaking, there's usually a good reason some lost friends were lost. Oh link |

Yes. I agree with Florida Toy that an option between "it transformed my life"and "I'm not sure why or what to do with it" would be necessary to describe how I use this communication tool. |

Oh for Christ's sake, of course I do. That's like asking, "Do you use a telephone". As with anything else, moderation and prudence are key ingredients. I don't post everything and I don't spend a lot of time on it, but I have found that it's an excellent way to stay in touch with friends and family in far-flung places. I can't believe that this is something that should require justification at all. It's the future, people. Don't fear it. It will happen whether you want it to or not. |

Yes, I just recently gave in and signed up, as many of my friends seem unable to communicate in any other way anymore. I could get new friends, but it seemed easier to just open an account. I don't use it much. Doug |

Connard Sage already uses TMP as his Facebook. I fear you may be confusing me with John the OFM. Despite the obvious similarities, we are in fact two entirely different people separated by a big ocean. I use a completely different forum as my Farcebook. |

I found it a handy way to keep in touch with my wife when she was in Egypt. Posting pics of the kids etc. Haven't touched it since she got back but I don't have anything against it. |
KSmyth | 03 Feb 2012 10:41 a.m. PST |
I have Facebook, but don't use it to its full capability. It lets me stay in touch with former students and lets me know what my kids are thinking (which is sometimes scary.) I do think it offers more than e-mail, but it's also a huge time sucker. I've got better things to do than give my life to Facebook. |
Garand | 03 Feb 2012 10:44 a.m. PST |
Yes, I've found it very useful to keep tabs on my favorite manufacturers/games companies/publishers/bands, as well as keep in touch with friends. I wonder how many people questioned the usefulness of the telephone when that became prominent

Actually, it's got me wondering how some of you feel about this new "round Earth" theory that's been making the rounds. I see myself not so much as a technophobe as secular Amish. Most people think the Amish are flat against technology but this isn't true. They evaluate technology to see if it adds anything useful to their lives, they particularly abhor anything which makes them dependent. Then either dismiss or adopt it. They have very sophisticated plumbing for example but no electricity. I try to figure out what it is I want to do, then adopt technology which helps me to do it. I get the impression a lot of technophiles allow what is possible to overly influence if not direct what they want to do. This has some amusing consequences. |

I don't think Bell Telephone sold your personal information as soon as you bought a phone in the 1880s, unless ol' Alexander Graham was more of a voyeur than we've been taught. To directly answer the question, though, see Western Union. They blew it big time regarding the telephone. |
Connard Sage | 03 Feb 2012 11:20 a.m. PST |
I don't think Bell Telephone sold your personal information as soon as you bought a phone in the 1880s, unless ol' Alexander Graham was more of a voyeur than we've been taught. There was a lot less personal information to be easily had in the 1880s. Your point again? |
Rudysnelson | 03 Feb 2012 11:29 a.m. PST |
Started doing Fb when I had open-heart surgery. It was a great way to keep in touch with friends and re-connect with old classmates. I do not play all of the games or check out any adverts. Just talk to frends. The State of Alabama recommended strongly that all State and County agencies open social media accounts . So now I montior one FB account for work. i also have one for my store which I post what shows I am going to attend. It can be useful. |
