Musing on today's real Poll.

I believe that if Dear Editor is soliciting un-needed democratic permission to make a change in TMP Policy, that a YES vote requires an absolute majority.
Of course, depending on the phrasing, it could be a NO vote that changes policy.

I believe that a "no opinion", or "needs more boobies" vote is in fact a vote against the premise of the Poll.

We just had a Poll about a 6 month moratorium on new Boards. YES won, with 51% of the vote, despite the fact that there were "no opinion" choices.

I once jokingly suggested that TMP should follow the US Constitution. Far too many did not get the joke, but that's their fault, not mine. grin
However, it is VERY difficult to ammend. Such should be the case here. If a strict 50.1% YES vote is necessary to change policy, so be it.

I consider adding Boards to be merely administrative, akin to Ford doing a survey to see if anyone would buy a chartreuse F150 pickup truck. This is not changing policy.

Put me down as a 'no opinion'.

No it isn't.

I let my yes be yes and me no be no (now).

So Jah knows no opinion is also me no opinion, you dig ?

richarDISNEY02 Feb 2012 8:22 a.m. PST

To me, "No Opinion" means :
1) I don't play this scale, but I want to win something.
or
2) I don't care, I just want to win something.
or the very rare..
3) I really have no opinion. Those are all really good choices, and I cannot edge out a winner.

But that third one is VERY rare…

I've always assumed that "no opinion" meant either that there was no interest in the topic's subject, or that a satisfactory answer wasn't available to choose from.

I guess I was wrong! grin

Wot Connard said, both times.

I was once told that deciding not to make a decision was making a decision.

So deciding one has no decision just HAS to be a decision.

Ummmm….doesnt it? huh?

Grizzlymc02 Feb 2012 9:16 a.m. PST

No opinion

CeruLucifus02 Feb 2012 9:26 a.m. PST

No opinion means a willingness to go along with the majority combined with an unwillingness to vote and thereby possibly skew the results.

John the OFM02 Feb 2012 9:28 a.m. PST

My REAL question is, does YES merely have to beat NO to "win" the Poll, or does it need 50.1% of the vote?
I say that it needs 50.1% to win.

darthfozzywig02 Feb 2012 10:01 a.m. PST

'No opinion' for me is often "I'm not familiar enough with the subject to give a legitimate answer…and I want a cookie."

And yes, even with how ridiculous these poll questions usually are, I do try to give a real answer. I know, it's silly.

My REAL question is, does YES merely have to beat NO to "win" the Poll, or does it need 50.1% of the vote?

That's a very different question than you asked when starting this thread. :)

Schogun02 Feb 2012 11:03 a.m. PST

Some polls let you view the results without voting first. TMP Polls do not. So I assume many folks vote "No Opinion" so they can see the results.

religon02 Feb 2012 11:18 a.m. PST

In using the term "win," I think the OP is confusing TMP polls with the Thunderdome. A poll expresses opinion. Interpreting poll results are nearly impossible without exercising care and intelligence while devising the poll. That care and intelligence appears to be generally lacking on TMP. Consequently, those looking for meaning in the results are the real losers.

In a properly conducted poll, the option of "No Opinion" helps prevent tainted results. I don't think it applies to TMP.

The Thunderdome, also used to settle differences of opinion, does have winners. Two men enter. One man leaves. The one that leaves is the winner.

I'm not entirely against TMP policy being decided by the Thunderdome and replacing the Dawghouse with "The Wheel."

Is this about scale creep?

darthfozzywig02 Feb 2012 11:29 a.m. PST

Good idea.

Ask Bill, I just read here.

No Opinion should be replaced with I am Confused.
When a man's knowledge is not in order, the more of it he has the greater will be his confusion.

Broadsword02 Feb 2012 12:30 p.m. PST

2) I don't care, I just want to win something.

No opinion should be replaced with….

'I have no idea why I'm here, I just had to say something – I need to be heard'.

Lentulus02 Feb 2012 2:39 p.m. PST

I don't even want to have an opinion.

SpuriousMilius02 Feb 2012 3:51 p.m. PST

My opinion is no.

highlandcatfrog02 Feb 2012 7:09 p.m. PST

No opinion is not a de facto no vote.

It is not a de facto yes vote.

It is no opinion. No more, no less. The reason is irrelevant.

John the OFM02 Feb 2012 7:27 p.m. PST

Since I was unclear from the start, I withdraw this Poll Suggestion, (if it's possible) and instead suggest this:
