we have played this rule set 1x in 28mm and really like it so far; the mechanism for reacting during the other player's move seems to allow a proper flow of unit interactions on the Napoleonic battlefield; rules are generally clear for a first release and the designer supports them on a Yahoo site; minor quibbles at this time are:
(1) minimum presentation of gaming historical battles; however, i am ok with that, as i get to work up the scenarios myself and have established an algorithm for assigning Special Rules to units based upon national and temporal variations over the era
(2) primary design for tournament play (and being done in 2-3 hours); as written, the victory conditions reflect that; also, all terrain must be in square pieces? easy enough to ignore these when putting together one's own battles
major quibble (a real stinker here)
(3) rules allow artillery to fire through friendly units on the assumption the arty commander always finds an elevated position from which to fire-
this is just incorrect, and mostly never happened according to Wise and Hook (Osprey Men-at-Arms #96, "Artillery Equipment of the Napoleonic Wars")- not sure why this made it into the design, unless it was a means to give arty some protection (they seemed fragile in the first go at the game), but I am thinking I could replace a French Guard 6 pdr fronted by a line of Guard Grenadiers-a-cheval with an M5 Stuart from WWII and get about the same effect on the table (okay, that may be an exaggeration)
but the game is a blast, very fluid; we will make an adjustment on the arty rule (no shooting through friendlies!!) and soldier on (thinking of allowing the arty crew to seek cover in a nearby square if they gain a reaction when charged
we shall see)
