Does it annoy you when people refer to their minis as "dudes"? |
Connard Sage | 30 Jan 2012 4:30 p.m. PST |
I don't think I've ever heard anyone do that. I've got some more of my banal poll suggestions if you're running out? I don't think I've done 'favourite ice cream' yet. Have I? |

For the OP, I do occassionally refer to my greenies as, "goons." Regarding the proposed *better* subject matter: San Francisco Mint. |

It's apparently the latest 40K fad, maybe a U.S. thing? I don't know why it annoys me
|
Yesthatphil | 30 Jan 2012 5:37 p.m. PST |
because it _is annoying? It isn't exclusively a U.S. thing btw (and I think you have the general provenance right)

I refer to my miniatures as my dudes on occasion; since its also an expression that refers to male anatomy I'm not surprised that it annoys some people. If it's a 40k fad, it's the first I've heard of it; I don't play 40k. |
TheCaptainGeneral | 30 Jan 2012 6:01 p.m. PST |
I think it has to do with the younger gamers and their slang. Heck, I have done it at one point or another. "That dude there is going to move and shoot." More often than not, I usually say, "That guy there is going to
" I guess it makes me feel younger? (Only 27, but, still
) |
The Angry Piper | 30 Jan 2012 6:05 p.m. PST |
Yeah. I often call them "guys", too. |

"Dude" is a word I use to refer and address anyone or anything vaguely masculine
friends, coworkers, dogs, miniatures
I am almost 43 but I grew up in Southern California and it stuck

It annoys me when people refer to their dudes as 'minis'. |
M C MonkeyDew | 31 Jan 2012 4:18 a.m. PST |
Indeed. Quite often. Not sure if any of them have been GW though. Also chaps, fellahs, figgers, gentlemen, men*, pukka gens, folks, dogs, cats, hepcats, dudesters, hipsters, and very occasionally late for dinner but NEVER minis. *Or whatever they happen to actually be. |
PygmaelionAgain | 31 Jan 2012 5:54 a.m. PST |
You've been listening to 40k podcasts, and therefore are probably picking up on some of the "language" used by persons in places farther west. If you find yourself saying "At the end of the day" before 2/3rds of your statements, that has the same root cause. |
Sundance | 31 Jan 2012 6:24 a.m. PST |
Would you like to meet my little friends? |
John the Greater | 31 Jan 2012 7:51 a.m. PST |
I have never heard anyone call their guys "dudes". Of course, I don't do 40K, so I am out of the loop. My wife calls them my "little men." Maybe one day I will gently correct her and let her know the correct term is "mighty leaden host." |
ordinarybass | 31 Jan 2012 9:05 a.m. PST |
I've probably referred to my minis as "Dudes" before, but that's likely because I refer to people as "dude" also. Suck it up. |
Altius | 31 Jan 2012 9:51 a.m. PST |
They have names, you know. All of them. It doesn't really annoy me when someone else calls his men "dudes". Living in Austin, that's a word I hear frequently anyway. But it's also not my own choice. I typically refer to mine as "my troops", "my men", or often, "my guys", but never "my dudes". |

Dude is common surfer slang here in California. It's considered 'cool' around here because it's so retro '80s 'Bill and Ted' and the teenage skateboarders and developmentally arrested slackers (including gamers and yours truly) love it. |
Lentulus | 01 Feb 2012 11:26 a.m. PST |
Never heard it, would not bug me. I tend to refer to my figures as "the lads" when I am in a fanciful mood as in "we'll have to get the lads on the table this weekend" (which would sound odd to anyone not a gamer, I confess), and by the unit or type when at the table, as in "Ha!, Your Guards have failed again!" |
