By the way, after more digging (pardon the pun) on the subject of mining roof supports, I found that this is today's preferred tool for holding up the tunnel ceiling:

Back to the matter of terrain …

While some tunnels will seem a bit tight, a few wide interior voids within the rock would need to be taken into consideration too, don't you think?
