How much time do you typically waste in chatting before actually starting the wargame?

Sundance27 Jan 2012 6:37 p.m. PST

up to 2 hours.

About a half hour, depending on how many show up.

Space Monkey27 Jan 2012 6:58 p.m. PST

At least half an hour… sometimes more… sometimes we end up watching a movie.

ming3127 Jan 2012 7:00 p.m. PST

A lot least an hour

John the OFM27 Jan 2012 7:10 p.m. PST

We chat before, during and after.

noimtheotherguy27 Jan 2012 7:12 p.m. PST

Depends on who is running the game, in our group. I tend to be a bit dictatorial, and when I say, "time to start the game", we do. When our other GM is running things, he can be quite the kibbitzer. Let's say I've learned to bring something along to read or paint. grin

Mooseworks827 Jan 2012 7:31 p.m. PST

As a solo-wargamer I have no chat prior to gaming.

Little Big Wars27 Jan 2012 7:49 p.m. PST

As a solo-wargamer I have no chat prior to gaming.

You don't talk to yourself before/during/after? Doesn't it feel weird to sit in silence and play? It certainly does when I'm solo gaming.

Dale Hurtt27 Jan 2012 7:56 p.m. PST

None that is "wasted".

DeanMoto27 Jan 2012 7:58 p.m. PST

Oh…so, I guess we can declare XXX the winner; now what were we talking about again…

redmist112227 Jan 2012 8:11 p.m. PST

It depends who shows up…we have a few folks that travel a bit and miss a few months on end…so when they show up…a lot of catching up and some gaming.

cavcrazy27 Jan 2012 8:39 p.m. PST

30 minutes or so just to catch up, but there is usually chatter the whole day.

21eRegt27 Jan 2012 9:21 p.m. PST

Like cavcrazy said.

How much chatting do we do before wasting time on a game?

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER27 Jan 2012 10:18 p.m. PST

Quite a bit.

ochoin deach27 Jan 2012 10:55 p.m. PST

Too long. But it's half the fun.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP27 Jan 2012 11:23 p.m. PST

Yeah, we talk at various times before and after. Not so much during except for questions, joking and tactical points.

Thanks,

John

All night sometimes…

Given up for good28 Jan 2012 2:56 a.m. PST

@connard – we better not meet face to face else the dice will never roll grin

John Armatys28 Jan 2012 4:46 a.m. PST

I don't think that the time is wasted…..

TamsinP28 Jan 2012 5:10 a.m. PST

I think the longest I've spent is a shade under 3 hours. If the person running the game had turned up when he said he would (we should have known better – he always turns up about an hour after he says he will) it would have been a shade under 2 hours of pre-game chatting.

Normally though, it's about 30-60 minutes of pre-game chat with various players about gaming, appreciating miniatures, random banter and giving everyone time to wind down after work and to eat a meal before getting on to the serious business of gaming.

epturner28 Jan 2012 7:29 a.m. PST

What the OFM said. In the four groups that I somehow manage to affiliate with, the Chatty Cathy factor is rather high.

Of course, the pre-die rolling smack talk phase is usually followed by the post turn crow munching phase, which I think is a function of some of the gentlemen I associate with.

Except when certain members of the Mess choose to sing…

I don't 'waste' any time chatting before the game, these are my gaming friends, chatting to them is no waste.

Syrinx028 Jan 2012 9:02 p.m. PST

If something unexpected happens and only a few of us show up we might not ever get a game going. For really big battles or a tournament event we try hard to keep the pace fast and on schedule. We socialize a lot during normal gaming.

Grizzlymc28 Jan 2012 11:20 p.m. PST

Never more than 12 hours, and then only if there is much liquid refreshment.

Early morning writer29 Jan 2012 12:35 a.m. PST

A few minutes, unless M shows up. Then an hour or two. : )

Bowman29 Jan 2012 3:47 a.m. PST

Socializing with friends can't be considered "wasted time". A poor choice of words, Bill.

Inkpaduta29 Jan 2012 11:28 a.m. PST

Just as long as it takes for the last person to show up. Made ten to fifteen minutes.

koyli196830 Jan 2012 12:50 p.m. PST

chatting is part of the game some one cannot see the difference

richarDISNEY01 Feb 2012 8:54 a.m. PST

We chat for about an hour while setting up the boards…
beer

Altius01 Feb 2012 9:01 a.m. PST

An hour or so, I guess. And who says it's wasted time?
