I hear that at one recent tournament, 9 of the 22 entries were Grey Knights armies.

I've loved the Grey Knights since I first read about them in 2nd edition. I think they look cool, the back ground almost forces the games you play with them to be scenario driven and I'll always have an army of them now that you can field armies of them. I got them in the last edition although I've had a unit of them since 2nd edition.

I think the appeal of Grey knights is not their winnability but the aesthetic of it. There is probably something to the fact that they are pretty easy to paint too.

How did they fare in the standings?

Do they fall pretty evenly across the bell curve as far as results go, or are they all clustered up in the first through ninth place slots?

I've played thirteen games against Grey Knights since they were released, against different gamers, both in friendly and tournament matches.

Of the thirteen games I have won 9 and tied 4. Not a single game lost.

In 5 games I used Blood Angels (4 victories, one tie); 2 games with Imperial Guard (both wins); 2 games with Necrons (one tie, one win); 3 games with Chaos (2 ties, one win); one with Nids (another win).

My impression is that they are tough as nails, but far from invencible. The hardest list to win was one formed by Castellan Crowe, 5 Razorbacks with assault guns and psy ammo, 3 dreadnoughts with twin heavy cannons with psy ammo and 5 purifier (are they called that in English?)squads. Of three games I managed to win one, and tied two.

The easiest wins were against the list that included the Paladins and Draigo with a Land Raider as transport. My opponent did sink so many points in just a single unit that my IG made short work of the rest of his army, and then beat the crap out of Draigo's Own.

I am not a particularly strong gamer, by the way. Neither my lists are very cheesy -I like to field units I fancy by their aestetics or background, not because they are specially powerful-.

I didn't hear.

People who play Grey Knights don't play to win. They play GK because they like the army. That's the spirit of 40K, not 'I must get the beardiest army-of-the-moment so I can win the most RT tournaments' army.

Nice to see a lack of flaming! It's true though. It's all about the aesthetic and fluff. It's what draws people in. It's why I love Space Wolves and Imperial guard and build my armies based on what I think looks cool instead of what I know is powerful.
