We are doing the Battle of Hastenbeck out of the Age of Honor senarios book for AGE of EAGLES. The allies have the city of Hameln and it is garrison with fortress. Would this city have fortress guns? thanks Lord Ghee |

For the purposes of this scenario, assume no guns. If there is significant artillery in such locations, we'll normally put cannon icons inside. Otherwise always remember you can post such questions to our Yahoo Group or to me direct at sales@ageofeagles.com. Regards, Colonel Bill ageofeagles.grouply.com |

Thank you for your answer Colonel Bill, this looks like a great game and I will be posting pictures and AAr here and on the yahoo group. As allway I like using gaming to explore history, I feel that one reason the French would not move to the left is the threat of those guns. So the question did every fortess have guns? Since you popped in, in Age of Honor are battalion guns figured in to the firepower? there is no range for them on the charts. The french having 4 pounder and the allies 3 means this is a bit of weight that is appeared to be unaccounted for. thank you LordGhee |

A French relation on this battle mentions French captured 72 pieces with the surrender of Hameln a few days after Hastenbeck. |

In AOH each brigade which had battalion guns has an extra infantry stand to account for their impact. They are not represented on the table. All fortresses did have guns, but IMHO their purpose was primarily defensive and not as a stationary bombardment platform. In field battles such as this I try to exclude any offensive capability from a fortress unless history tells us of a definitive impact. Otherwise odd things happen such as a player storming the fort to capture the 12 batteries (72 guns) inside for Victory Point purposes. Note I've treated Minden, Torgau and some other battles the same way. Now, if I were creating the actual siege, such as at Lille, I would include the guns, but I'd also include the siege train for the guys outside. Regards, Colonel Bill ageofeagles.grouply.com |
