I've lately conceived the idea of setting a campaign inspired in the Ottoman-Venetian and Austrian-Turkish wars (respectively 1714-1718 and 1716-1718), but have little idea --if any-- about what sources to use to get informed on the matter.

The easiest part was providing myself with some info on the Ottoman army. I already had an excellent booklet on the WSS Imperial army, so no problem on this side.

However, I am plainly ignorant about the 1714-1718 Venetian army, or the war itself. Would anyone enlighten me at this respect with some advice?

Thanks in advance,
Lluís

the wiki isn't too bad. Probably the most info you are going to find in English: link

For the Austrian side & Belgrade 1717 I would look for a Biography of Prince Eugen of Savoy.

You might want to read Venice, Austria and the Turks in the Seventeenth Century. The last chapter discusses the Ottoman reconquests of the Balkans and Greece in the eighteenth century.

There are sources on the net. Google scholar has some old books. That said I have been researching 18th century conflicts for my dissertation and it seems most of the Venetian activity was siege defense on land and naval battles. Indeed one of the reasons the Austrian's intervened in 1716 was because the Venetians were being overrun not just in Morea but more dangerously in Dalmatia (modern coastal Croatia).

A good source for OBs and maps is The Hessian Archives which are online. The best material on the Venetians focuses on the 1680s period but there is some good stuff on the 1714-16 conflict.

I joined the Ottomanwars Yahoo group to seek information for my 18th c. Ottomans. Good reference material covering army composition, uniforms and battles.

Thanks for such an amount of useful information, Sirs. I've noticed there was also an Italian booklet on the 18th century Venetian Army, whose title was L'esercito veneziano nel '700 by one Francesco P. Favaloro (1995). Apparently sold out long ago :(

Timurlank – thanks for the Hessian Archives Link. A truly amazing wealth of info!

DONALD QUATAERT has written a couple of books that may be of interest. I've hard copies, but the web will have them somewhere. "The Ottoman Empire 1700-1922". My Cambridge University press paperback has an ISBN of 978-0-521-54782-6 The first 4 chapters are if interest here. He also did an economic & scoial history 1300-1914 that's got gerat info on the feudal structure especially in the Balkans.

@Narratio,

The thanks should be given to Custine. I have to thank the TMP bug for the above mishap.

There's a whole bunch of stuff coming availble on the various Russian – Ottoman conflicts that may be of use, but it's all in Russian. Luckily I'm currently in a Russian speaking country and get translations done really easy. If I find something relevent I'll drop you a link.

Got another one for you. Try – "Ottoman warfare, 1500–1700" by Rhoads Murphey. The ebook ISBN is 0-203-01597-5.

IMO this is pretty much the definitive work on the subject. Complete with maps and lots on the economics of military power. Just found it sitting on my HD.
