It has to be the d4…my arguments: The Renaissance Troll

It just sort of lies there.

A D8 numbered 1-4 twice rolls a lot better.

They also used to be so sharp they could have been employed as caltrops!

However, be careful if using a larger die numbered smaller multiple times.

David and I played a game of PRIDE last Saturday, and his shaman was having a terrible time rolling a D20 to cast a Difficulty 10 spell -- which requires beating the difficulty, so 11+. Near the end of the game (which he won anyway, he's much better at my rules than I am) he discovered his D20 was numbered 1-0 twice, no teens at all.

Ah, the classic old AD&D d20! You had to take a permanent marker and ink in half the faces (alternating numbers to get an even spread) so that you had 0-9 in black and 0-9 in whatever color the die itself was. If you rolled a black die, you added ten to the result. I still have mine, circa 1980. (This was the generation of dice that also included the d4 caltrop.)

It seems almost every long term gamer knows of an incident like this- gaming gold!

I admit it. I've stepped on a d4, hurt like h**l!

There were some guys playing "Check Your 6" at Hot Lead one time – midway through the game the Ref realized he had given some of them average dice instead of regular d6's!

I was always rather fond of the D4 – It was different. as a 13 year old the 'number the right way up' reading method seemed ingenious.

Of course, when I started roleplaying none of us owned polyhedral dice, and used cardboard spinners with a pencil stuck through them – some rolls could take ages.

you tell kids that nowadays and they don't believe you.

I like the twelve-sider numbered 1-4 thrice even better.

Mako1119 Jan 2012 1:09 p.m. PST

I like the D4, and as mentioned, it makes a great caltrop against barefoot interlopers.

DuckanCover19 Jan 2012 2:39 p.m. PST

How odd it sounds to be telling one's nine year old to "be careful with that dice" and "don't leave that on the floor like that, someone will get hurt". Caltrop indeed!

Go the eight and twelve sided d4s…..

Then there's the actual d100, which is unreadable.
