True or False: You'll never regret buying well-painted figures. |
BrigadeGames | 17 Jan 2012 7:01 p.m. PST |
True because if they are well painted they can almost always be resold at a decent price. |
Mooseworks8 | 17 Jan 2012 7:18 p.m. PST |
One might regret having not painted them. |

True, although it can become a problem if you want to expand the "army" and can't match the painting style. |

True as long as you don't pay too much. Else the regret will be if you find out you paid more than you should. But that is applicable to any purchase. I say true. I have recently come to more money than time lately in life and just started getting a few painted items lately. I'm so very happy with them. I tend to feel a lot of regret when I look over unfinished (as in unbuilt and unpainted) armies and realize I'm never going to finish them. So I've "discovered" painted stuff and painting services although it's quite limited right now. |

I admit having bought more than a fair number of painted figures. In my heart I always cheer for the units I've painted myself. |

I regret selling some well painted figures. Last Fall In I actually bought from a dealer a DBA army I was commissioned to paint back in 2001. |

True, but I'd still rather paint well painted miniatures than buy them. Unfortunately, that is not normally the case

I'd rather paint than buy painted
but there are some painters I'd like to have some work by. So if I were to buy from them I doubt I'd regret it. |

False, but special circumstances. Purchased some very nicely painted figures on eBay, they arrived so poorly packaged that their heavy washer bases had knocked much of the paint off of them in transit. Really hurt my heart to see them. I did compel the idiot seller to refund my money, but he wouldn't refund the shipping back to him. Really regretted purchasing them. Heartache, hassle and expense for nothing. |

I do all my own painting (for now, at least) so can't answer the specific question – but would endorse
'always buy the best quality you can afford' (it always pays you back in the long run)
books, terrain, figures, brushes, whatever. Phil |

True for me. I love painting but I love gaming more and find little time to paint so buying in some well painted figures gives me a lot more game options. On the back of these purchases I have tried many more periods than I would have done by painting my own. I sometimes dream of the day when my entire collection is self painted but then I drag myself back to reality – some of the figures I have are way better than I could manage although I am usually very happy with my own efforts. |

True, with two caveats: 1) You have to be able to afford it. No taking dinner away from your kids just to buy pretty models! 2) You need to be able to retouch the models if they get chipped -- and they will sooner or later because you're going to game with them. So avoid paint style and color choices you can't emulate from a sample. Personally my preference is to buy very basic paint jobs that I can improve with washes or highlighting plus a good base treatment -- this gives me some investment and ownership in the figure. But I answered assuming I was willing to buy a well-painted figure. |

False. Looking at the opportunity costs of past actions always reveals better options. Most of my best buys have been versatile, unpainted historical figures, terrain or heavily licensed, short-run items (Star Wars, LOTR, BattleTech, etc.) I have no shortage of well-painted figures, but my eye teeth for an Unseen Firebee. |
