I'm listening to The 11th Company (40K podcast), and they mention how they're not ready to take their Necron army to tournaments yet because they haven't got enough experience with it to know how it plays.

I was reading Slingshot the other day, and a gamer mentioned that he's lucky if he gets any gaming done with his new army before the tournament.

So… how much gaming experience do you get with a new army, before taking it to the tournament?

Me, none. I paint them and go when I can. I don't care if I win anymore, so long as my army is better painted than my opponents!

After getting my clock cleaned over the weekend at a Flames of War event, I should have played my army a few times to know what NOT to do. It was bad, really bad.

From my experience, usually very little as I'm spending all my time painting.

If I can't get a game with a new army before a tourney I at least set up a table and deploy it and make a few moves.

Gives a feel for how wide and fast it is at first, thereafter you're in the hands of fate and the enemy.

I thought I was ready for this past weekend's tournament.
I had 6 practice games with my Mycenaean Greeks where I did okay. Against my first 3 opponents, it was like I had never played before.

Now granted 1 of those games was 2010, and the last 5 in the month before the tournament.

I do not play tournaments anymore, but when I did back in the past I found useful to have some games before the actual event, to get the 'feeling' of my army. Curiously the only time I won a tournament was with a hastily put together army, because one of the gamers didn't show up and the organizers asked me to participate.
