While gaming a friend's house tonight a saw a few "samplings" of his Roman Seas paper warships. I am not an ancients gamer, but I am a sucker for nearly any naval game and I was impressed at the paper models. I figured I might pick up a set of these ships for myself and I looked over the Roman Seas rule set. I personally don't care for hex based naval rules. Can anyone recommend a good, easy (Beer & Pretzels) and really cheap or maybe even FREE rules set that would be for use with the Roman Sea's paper ships? |

All Free: Junior General Battle of Salamis very basic link Fleet of Battle – based on Piquet /Field of Battle link Nauta Naval Ancient Rules 700BC-400AD link Trireme link Warhammer Ancient Battles based Naval Rules PDF link The above rules differ in both scale and complexity . You may be able to "cobble together" your own set of rules using various ideas from the sets. Have fun |

I have not tried them, as I am not done assembling my ships, but here are a few free rules sets I have looked at: Death on the Seas Ramming Speed Oceanus Strategoi Corvus you can probably find them on freewargamesrules.co.uk |

Wow, quick responses, thank you! I had already tried the freewargamesrules but nothing really popped out at me. So far I think my favorite is Trireme, but I have downloaded both Nauta and Fleet of Battle and have been looking them over. I may end up going with the suggestion of cobbling my own together, as I like some of the above rule sets but there seams to be gaps or needed clarifications. |

Corvus are just about the level you describe. Not free but available through the Society of Ancients website for £5.00 GBP link They even come with coloured counters and fleet list suggestions to get you started. Simple to play yet a little bit more than just 'beer & pretzels' so should have more lasting appeal. If you want more counters of similar type try link These give a much larger range of ships spanning most of the Ancient period. |

I second GildasFacit; Corvus is a good set and you can get those spare fleets cheap as from TTT. |

I have been looking for a set called MARE NOSTRUM. It was a 2 page set made by a sailor back in the late 80s I believe. It was fun, simple, but more complex than My galley salley. He also made the ships, very nice ones (I might add). He was being deployed, and I have never seen him again. Anybody have any idea how to get ahold of these rules? |

Go to relativerange.com, and click on Ancient Battles Deluxe at the top. On the right there is a window with and there is a window with "ANCIENTS classic", and click on the "download". It is a hex-based, super-simple game of Ancinet combat, but it has a module for naval warfare in it, and it's free. Old-school, about 6 pages of rules. |
