Do you waste your money by buying reference materials for wargaming projects you may never get to? |

Dr Mathias | 07 Jan 2012 9:37 p.m. PST |
Heck yes I do. Sometimes it is even a genuine waste. |
The Dial Dude | 07 Jan 2012 9:42 p.m. PST |
Always. Even more so when it comes to terrain. If there is a book out about terrain, I have to buy it though I know nothing will come of it. |
Garand | 07 Jan 2012 9:44 p.m. PST |
It is never a waste. Reading and studying history is always beneficial, even if you never wargame that army/period. Damon. |
wrgmr1 | 07 Jan 2012 9:45 p.m. PST |
Uniforms, history, campaigns, generals, yes, just about anything. |
rmcaras | 07 Jan 2012 9:46 p.m. PST |
Absolutely!!! do I win a prize? |
Joep123 | 07 Jan 2012 9:47 p.m. PST |
Yes, I do but as others stated its not really a waste. I have a collection of Osprey books on different armies or units I have or planned on collecting. And being every hopeful, I might not game that period this year, but next year or ten years from now, you never know. Joep |
sneakgun | 07 Jan 2012 9:50 p.m. PST |
Of course, if I change my mind I donate the books to the local library, write it off my taxes. |

I buy reference materials on things that interest me which I probably will never game; but I don't consider it a waste. |
FoxtrotPapaRomeo | 07 Jan 2012 10:29 p.m. PST |
definitelt not a waste
part of the enjoyment |

Waste? Hardly a waste if it's for reference. Eric |

Reference materials are never a waste as far as I'm concerned; they're always educational whether I actually stick to the period or not. |
rct75001 | 08 Jan 2012 12:11 a.m. PST |
if i didn't how would I know which figures to buy and never paint?? |
FingerandToeGlenn | 08 Jan 2012 12:21 a.m. PST |
I'm trying to understand the question. Books . . . buying . . bad. Nope, doesn't compute. |
helmet101 | 08 Jan 2012 12:32 a.m. PST |
I spend money on references and waste money on wargaming projects |
SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER | 08 Jan 2012 3:39 a.m. PST |
It's never a waste to me. |
Raynman | 08 Jan 2012 4:16 a.m. PST |
Yes, That's the fun part! |
Huscarle | 08 Jan 2012 5:31 a.m. PST |
Not a waste to me, but an excuse to expand my limited knowledge & my library. |
Etranger | 08 Jan 2012 5:32 a.m. PST |
It has never been a waste. |
etotheipi | 08 Jan 2012 5:37 a.m. PST |
I agree with Garand. It's never a waste. I always read them. Sometimes reading them makes me decide "Oh, I really don't want to do that after all." |
Mooseworks8 | 08 Jan 2012 5:49 a.m. PST |
It has never been a waste. I concur. |
Dave Crowell | 08 Jan 2012 6:16 a.m. PST |
Waste money on references ? Very seldom. I read history and references for pleasure reading, have done since I was a kid. The only time I would call the money spent on reference material to be a wast is when it turns out the book is utter rubbish. Luckily I have gotten pretty good at spotting those before purchase. |
flooglestreet | 08 Jan 2012 6:30 a.m. PST |
Like most posters, I spend money on references and do not consider it a waste. |
Steve | 08 Jan 2012 6:40 a.m. PST |
I rarely buy books for the purpose of painting or modelling guides. If I need a painting reference I usually get it from the net. Of course I often buy books for these periods, but generally they would not provide much help for painting. Steve |
basileus66 | 08 Jan 2012 6:45 a.m. PST |
As other posters have said: I spend money in reference materials; only sometimes I feel it has been wasted. |
LordNth | 08 Jan 2012 6:48 a.m. PST |
Books? Yes Time? Yes Hard drive space as I save photos? Most defiantly. |
Femeng2 | 08 Jan 2012 7:07 a.m. PST |
I agree with Garand. 5 bookcases full of reference books attest to it. |
rusty musket | 08 Jan 2012 7:09 a.m. PST |
Like others above, it has never been a waste, from of the point of view that I learned something new about military history or political history, which is what I enjoy doing. My waste has mostly been in figures. I will find a period interesting and then "have to have the figures", only to find it was much more interesting reading than trying to recreate on the tabletop. |
VonTed | 08 Jan 2012 7:27 a.m. PST |
If I can buy it on Amazon it isn't "really" a hobby related expense and can be excluded from my mental budget calculations. |

Rudysnelson | 08 Jan 2012 7:39 a.m. PST |
Books on military topics with hard data like uniforms ToEs, OBs, maps, etc are never a waste of money. |
hurrahbro | 08 Jan 2012 7:43 a.m. PST |
I like many aspects of this 'collecting' hobby, reference materials are on of those aspects. I also enjoy the hunt for the right figures/references/materials etc. |
Skeptic | 08 Jan 2012 7:58 a.m. PST |
I don't see it as a waste, either, for the same reasons as the other posters have mentioned. In fact, I sometimes buy references to research a period or army before deciding whether to commit myself to buying any figures or terrain for it. |
John the OFM | 08 Jan 2012 8:25 a.m. PST |
The question assumes that the only reason to buy a history book is to turn it into a gaming project. |
Waco Joe | 08 Jan 2012 8:47 a.m. PST |
There is also a sliding scale of cost vs. utility. Would I pay $100 USD for a reference work on WW1 aircraft? Probably not. But I did pick up such a book for $15 USD at Half Price books once. You know, just in case. |
Jovian1 | 08 Jan 2012 8:52 a.m. PST |
No. I never waste money learning about periods of history. I may de use not to do a.period, but the money wasn't wasted. |

Good references are never a waste for me, as I enjoy the research more than any other aspect of the hobby. But if you want to talk about money spent on lead I'll never paint for rules I'll never read for games I'll never play, I'm your man. |
thosmoss | 08 Jan 2012 10:01 a.m. PST |
Those who don't waste money on reference materials are doomed to repeat them
Wait, that didn't come out right. |
Dynaman8789 | 08 Jan 2012 10:18 a.m. PST |
No- I don't buy them for projects I am getting to either. Plenty enough info on the web. |
John Michael Priest | 08 Jan 2012 10:38 a.m. PST |
I'd be lost without reference books. |
Cardinal Ximenez | 08 Jan 2012 12:02 p.m. PST |
Of course! How do you think I get ideas for the next one? DM |
Lee Brilleaux | 08 Jan 2012 12:06 p.m. PST |
I usually regret NOT buying books more than I regret buying them. Do you think that book on the Chaco Wars that was in the Oxfam bookshop in Henley-on-Thames in 2009 is still there? |
Martin Rapier | 08 Jan 2012 1:24 p.m. PST |
I don't think any book purchase is a waste, but I do have to think carefully now about storage space as our 'book rooms' are packed from floor to ceiling (my wife is also an avid reader). If only more military history and military science books were available on Kindle. Give it time. |
