Just wondering, you Belgians are blessed with SO MANY wonderful beers! How do you choose?

gert174606 Jan 2012 9:05 p.m. PST

I'm not Belgian, but when we crack open some 'Belgians' during a game over here in Pennsylvania, it's usually something from Ommegang!

I'm not Belgian either, but have lived here for the last 16 years. My everyday beer is Palm, a very good ale.

Fonzie07 Jan 2012 2:50 a.m. PST

Hate to burst your bubble guys but there is no beer at Belgian wargames tables. Now after the game, could be… but during the game us Belgians tend to stay sober. :-)

PS: my favorite is Stella Artois with Palm a good second.

Hey Fonzie,
Speak for yourself! ;-) No alcohol at a Belgian wargames table?
At the Red Barons weekly club gatherings (convenently located in a pub in Ghent ;-) ) it's quite honestly each to his own but most of the time the heavier beers. Trappists and the like. And wine of course. Games finish most of the time before inebriation sets in. The post game comments phase on the other hand …

Well, at the TSA tables there's never any alcohol present…

Naah, Euuh, the beers that go down the most at Tin Soldiers are without doubt Leffe (Blond and Dark), Kriek (Lindemans is the best), Westmalle Trappist, and of course the infamous Duvel.
When we're really thirsty, we tend to get to the lighter stuff like Jupiler.

when I was in Belgium for the war walks…

Waterloo,
Ypres,
Oudenarde,
Bastogne,

etc…

Jupiler was the beer of choice, Light, refreshing, and cool.

Most of the Belgians said that Stella Artois was what foreigners drank to look Belgian.

Mind you Fries with Mayo… amazing!

I stand corrected Henk, I forgot about the Red Barons of Ghent. No further comment. :-)

Like Henk said in Ghent, Tongerloo, Westmalle trippel and Chimay mostly.

At home Trippel Karmeliet, Barbar and kriek and sorry Koekie, I (and some other Red Barons) wouldn't name Lindemans as the best kriek, much to sweet for our taste.

I myself prefer Girardin, Boon, Cantillon Oud Beersel to name a few.

Funny enough I often drink German or British beers during wargaming sessions (shame on me … ). You can drink more without getting drunk, and maintain the ability to focus ;-)

But my beer-fridge (yes, I keep a seperate frdige just for beers) is stocked with local Belgian beers, and is raided regularly during wargaming sessions. Current favorites include Orval, Straffe Hendrik, Malmedy Black, Faro, Gulden Draak.

BTW, Stella Artois is indeed something not a respectable Belgian beer-connoisseur would drink.

Ommegang is quite good – I also drank it a lot while I was living in the US. The closest you can get to Belgian-style beers made in the US.

Cardinal Ximenez07 Jan 2012 2:41 p.m. PST

Orval here in NJ when I can get it.

I was searching for a Flanders Brown today, but only found Duchesse de Bourgoune for about $16 USD for six bottles. Much as I love it, I had to pass. It is served on tap in a restaurant in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and in Hampton, Virginia.

Chimay Bleue is my favourite. I had my first glass in a cafe just off the main square in Bruges ten years ago, and remember being amazed that beer could taste that good.

WillieB11 Mar 2012 4:25 p.m. PST

The Chimay would be one of my favourites as well. Orval and La Chouffe a close second.

I guess Leffe would be one of the most popular heavier abbey beers and the Westvleteren Trappist beer has been chosen as best beer in the world for the second time now.
Duvel probably the the most drank 'heavy' blond beer. Tauro never caught on really.

White beers probably still Hoegaarden.

Jupiler is indeed a very good lager and yes, Stella Artois is somewhat of a joke we naughty Belgians play on foreigners.

Is it true that Belgians really like fries?

(Phil Dutre)23 Sep 2012 4:46 a.m. PST

Of course we like fries. But the more important question is what dressing you like on your fries.

Respectably stalls selling fries have at least 30 or so sauces and dippings on offer.

But no fries allowed at the wargaming table! Too greasy …

We take tea – and bikkies.
