Who is your favorite emperor of the ancient Persian Empire?

(Excluding Greeks…)

taskforce5804 Jan 2012 9:24 a.m. PST

Cyrus II (Cyrus the Great)

If we can allow the Sassanians, Shapur I all the way.

Otherwise, got to be Cyrus like TF58 suggests.

Have to go with Cyrus. No telling what history and religion would be like if he had not let the Jews go back to Israel.

The first Darius, named Darius the builder, rather than conquering he focused on building. Nothing like a big government infrastructure and stimulus project to get the empire on track.

Whichever one is crushed beneath the wheels of my chariot.

Cyrus the Great04 Jan 2012 10:20 a.m. PST

Cyrus the Great, of course!

Not so much to be "admired" as "sympathized with," Darius (II ?), The Last Emperor, who had to face Alexander. He doesn't seem to have been a bad sort, but his physical cowardice in the face of The God, and being surrounded by (literally) back-stabbing SOB's, you gotta say he drew about the worst hand for any Emperor in history.

Spill a little tea/coffee/wine/cherry-vanilla-Dr. Pepper on the ground for him.

Not an emperor, but a queen – Esther

John the OFM04 Jan 2012 10:50 a.m. PST

Cyrus seemes like a hell of a swell guy.

Florida Tory04 Jan 2012 11:26 a.m. PST

Unequivocally none, but I agree with Dean's nomination of Esther.

Shapur I.

bilsonius04 Jan 2012 12:18 p.m. PST

Who was the tall one with all the piercings?
(only joking…)

KTravlos04 Jan 2012 12:39 p.m. PST

Achmenids

Darius I-One of the Greats of History
Artexerxes I- a shrewd ruler who gave the greeks a headache

Sassanids
Ardeshir I
Shapur I
Shapur II
Shapur III for successfully brokering a long peace
Yzadergerd I
Khosrau I

As you can see the Sassanids got more good ones then the Achemenids

Shaun Travers04 Jan 2012 1:33 p.m. PST

Shapur I is a fond favourite, but I admire Darius (the first) more. And Cyrus the Great is close behind.

Cyrus the Great – hands down

John D Salt04 Jan 2012 7:08 p.m. PST

Xerxes -- someones got to be the baddy for the 300.

"The King with half the East at heel is marched from lands of morning;
Their fighters drink the rivers up, their shafts benight the air,
And he that stands will die for nought, and home there's no returning.
The Spartans on the sea-wet rock sat down and combed their hair."

All the best,

John.

That's Darius III.

If I made an ancient Persian army, it'd be that of Darius I or Xerxes I, and of those, Darius is obviously the more impressive guy, so I guess it's him.

Khusrau06 Jan 2012 7:06 a.m. PST

Khusrau… (or Chosroes for those who still have the Purple Primer) – consistently beat everyone.. including the Romans many times in battles that they gloss over or don't report.

Any Persian Shah who can send an entire captured 'Legion' of artificers to build him a new city, has to be considered a success.
