If we can allow the Sassanians, Shapur I all the way. Otherwise, got to be Cyrus like TF58 suggests. -tv |

Have to go with Cyrus. No telling what history and religion would be like if he had not let the Jews go back to Israel. |

The first Darius, named Darius the builder, rather than conquering he focused on building. Nothing like a big government infrastructure and stimulus project to get the empire on track. |

Cyrus the Great, of course! |

Not so much to be "admired" as "sympathized with," Darius (II ?), The Last Emperor, who had to face Alexander. He doesn't seem to have been a bad sort, but his physical cowardice in the face of The God, and being surrounded by (literally) back-stabbing SOB's, you gotta say he drew about the worst hand for any Emperor in history. Spill a little tea/coffee/wine/cherry-vanilla-Dr. Pepper on the ground for him. TVAG |

Cyrus seemes like a hell of a swell guy. |

Unequivocally none, but I agree with Dean's nomination of Esther. Rick |

Shapur I is a fond favourite, but I admire Darius (the first) more. And Cyrus the Great is close behind. |

Xerxes -- someones got to be the baddy for the 300. "The King with half the East at heel is marched from lands of morning; Their fighters drink the rivers up, their shafts benight the air, And he that stands will die for nought, and home there's no returning. The Spartans on the sea-wet rock sat down and combed their hair." All the best, John. |

Not so much to be "admired" as "sympathized with," Darius (II ?), The Last Emperor, who had to face Alexander That's Darius III. If I made an ancient Persian army, it'd be that of Darius I or Xerxes I, and of those, Darius is obviously the more impressive guy, so I guess it's him. |

Khusrau
(or Chosroes for those who still have the Purple Primer) – consistently beat everyone.. including the Romans many times in battles that they gloss over or don't report. Any Persian Shah who can send an entire captured 'Legion' of artificers to build him a new city, has to be considered a success. |
