Thirty years ago, whilst a student architect in London, I was designing a school of law which I intended to be located in La Roche-sur-Yon [Napoleonville], Vendee. My intent was to dedicate the building to the memory of Napoleon, and to the Code Napoleon. To this day there is a fine equestrian statue of Napoleon dominating the central town square, which was the location of my project.
I was recommended, by my school, for a financial award to facilitate my trip to the site. I was required to present myself at the Royal Institute of British Architects, to deliver a presentation as to why I should be deserving of the award. I gave my little speech, which proclaimed my admiration for the life and achievements, both social and military, of Napoleon. At it's conclusion, the chairperson leaned forward and said, 'This great nation spent nearly twenty years fighting your tyrannical little hero, and now you expect to receive a grant from us to support your misguided adoration'. I responded 'I think your opinion of Napoleon may be as misguided as you seem to think mine is'. Needless to say I didn't get the money – but I did visit La Roche-Sur-Yon, and stayed in the Hotel Napoleon, and drank a Napoleon brandy [or two] to his memory
.. I'm not sure whether the chairperson, hated or feared Napoleon, but he certainly had an opinion

Could have been worse, you could have been asking for funding by presenting an admiring address about De Gaulle. You'll find that many Brits really do hate him. Ungrateful bastard – Charles, not you. |

"I suspect there was more hate and fear of the Highlanders in the 1745." Yes I think I was on that train – did'nt get in to Euston until 18:32 thanks to the yob supporters on it. |

Grand Quartier General- The book you're looking for is called Waterloo: Day of Battle. Coincidentally, I am currently rereading my copy, which is how I recognized the quote. |
