I'm organizing a regiment of Wurttembergers for 1812, and am wondering how the line infantry went about organizing its skirmishers, having drawn a blank on my reading so far.

Form what I understand, the Wurttemberg line infantry was organized into four-company battalions, with no designated skirmisher company as such.

While there were four whole light/jager battalions in the Wurttemberg army, I would also assume that the line infantry sent off skirmishers as well. Would I be correct in assuming that men were sent from the third rank to skirmish on something like the Prussian or Austrian model?

In a nutshell, for gaming purpose I would like to know what proportion of the battalion would be deployed as skirmishers, if any.

Any help gratefully appreciated!

I have no evidence to offer on that. My meager sources indicate that Wurtemburg line regiments in 1812 had 2 battalions each, which consisted of 1 grenadier and 3 musketeer companies.

There were fusilier and light infantry units, but no designated skirmishers in the line battalions. If we were playing a skirmish game, I'm sure the sergeant would assign some guys to go out at night and stand guard, or skirmish, or scout.

But that's not the same as tabletop skirmish capability. From all I can tell, Wurtemberger line units had zero skirmish capability. That service was to be provided by the jagers and light infantry units.

There is nothing I can see in the 1809 Reglement that describes skirmishing. Similarly Stadlinger does not appear to mention any specialist skirmishers in the organisations of a regiment in his history of the army.

On the other hand du Faur certainly depicts Württemberg line infantry skirmishing in 1812.

The normal order of a Württemberg regiment was in two ranks and I don't know where these skirmishers were drawn from. Presumably one or more platoons in each company were designated but I'm only guessing.
