Writing in Battlegames magazine, Mike Siggins listed this as one of his hobby regrets: The painting table should either be permanent or deployable in seconds. Do you have a permanent painting table? If so, do you regret it now? * it's a good idea to have a permanent painting table * it's a bad idea to have a permanent painting table * I tried having a permanent painting table and regret it (This is a repost of a topic that was accidentally nuked.) |

I like having my fulltime painting table
However
Necessity being the mother of invention has led these folks with temporary tables to come up with some great ideas that I wish I'd have thought of

I have one and could not live without it. Well
at least not if I wanted to get a lot of painting done. Tom |

it's a good idea to have a permanent painting table – a squad of painting elves to go along with it would also be awesome. |

Yes, I have one. The missus found me a secretary desk a few years ago, and it is my permanent painting table. It has the advantage of being closed up when necessary, although it almost never is. It replaced a roll-top desk that she bought me in '01 or thereabouts. Without a permanent area, I would get nothing done. BWW |

I have a full time table. It is a six foot section of kitchen counter top on top of a couple of sawhorses with board shelves running the length underneath for additional storage. Unfortunately amongst all the holiday moving and shaking it is somewhat overwhelmed. In better times it looks more like this:

I have one, but it's in the garage, so dust is a problem. Lesser of two evils, though. Were it inside, the cats would be a bigger problem. Doug |

Yep – have one and would have a hard time without it – an old artist desk that the Missus found at a garage sale One advantage was that I also have a permanent paint trolley as well, with the paint organized by colour as well as a couple of bits bins organized by contents (basing material, flags, heads, weapons, etc) |

Yes, two. One in the cellar for summer work and one in the den so I can paint while the wife does her reading etc. |

Yes. Worth it in oh so many ways. Racks and boxes for paint that never have to be put away. Before moving in with GF I had a painting desk in the room I used for an office and a converted garage as a game room which had a painting desk. Excessive? Yes but worth it. |

It's worth it if you have the space. |

I've had one for about 18 years. I don't always have the time to get a huge number of figures painted but its great not to have to pack up everything at the end of the day. |

I have a permanent painting "table" (workspace, actually). I don't have worry about anything being moved or disturbed in any way (and yes, there are cats/a dog living here too). It's great because I can leave a WIP and come back to it when I have time and just pick up from where I left off. I consider myself very fortunate to have a dedicated space to work in. |

Mine is temporary. I find it keeps me more organized, I guess. In the 40 years of model building and lately miniature painting, I've never had a permanent table though I've always had the ability to have one. Just have never done it. So you need more than the three responses, Bill! BTW love the avatar, Brian! |

I would kill to have a permanent painting table. I use the top of a steamer trunk about 15" by 30". All my painting supplies are organized in clear plastic boxes, paints in two or three, brushes in another, tools and files and misc in another. and a milk crate for larger items under a portable work bench. When done almost everything goes into the trunk. Don't even ask how pathetic my gaming table is. VR James Mattes |

I have a large drafting table that is always sets up. I find all the trays on the side handy for brushes, tools, etc. I then put a paint spinner on top of the table that has 160 of the paints I use in it so nothing gets in the way when I have those few precious minutes to paint. |

I have a permanent table but it gets used for all modelling aspects and computer bits and
My paints are in a box next to me and my brushes in a drawer the other side so its pretty permanent. |

I have a permanent table but all my painting equipment is portable so I can quickly move it anywhere. This is mainly to the club where we always have a painting table or sometimes to others peoples permanent painting areas for social painting (now there is another topic for you. Do you paint more/better in the prescence of others?) |

"or deployable in seconds" I have a man portable painting table with a base area for logistical backup. This consists of: i) a shoe box with my ready use brushes and paints ii) a tin tray littered with tools and odd tubes of glue iii) an A4 box file to hold my current project iv) four sheets of newspaper The base area is my 'room full of crap' as my wife so kindly puts it. When the urge to paint is overwhelming, tray, shoebox and boxfile are merely moved to their customary spot on the dining room table, having first positioned the sheets of newspaper. The whole setup process takes a few seconds, and can be cleared away again just as easily. I could paint in my 'room full of crap', but it seems so anti-social. From the dining room I can participate fully in family life (ie wash up, put spiders out etc) yet get some painting done too. |

I have a small permanent paiting station in the corner of our dining room. Our house's ground floor is open plan so I can paint and keep an eye on the kids playing in the living room and also keep an eye on any cooking I'm doing. |

Yes. I have an old architects drafting table as mine. Given to me by my Father in law about 20 years ago. Soon, I will have a hobby "building". Am in the process of buying a 2 storey shed to make into a hobby workshop for hobby stuff and tools. |

I would be much less productive if I had to pull out everything and set up each time I wanted to paint. I sometimes go in and paint for 15-20 minutes several days a week. If I did not have a permanent set up, I would lose a lot of these spontaneous, short painting sessions which add up to be quite productive for me. Allen |

Saddly no, my shop table is best with sunlight, high with no bending over, indestructable (a former industrial chemical work table) but not in a heated enviorment so only used from April to Oct. computer desk the rest of yesr. |

I have a permanent L shaped computer desk for my miniature work in one corner of the basement of the mew place. Before it has been portable spaces. Which to me met that all most nothing got done. Since setting this up I can get stuff done in the small bits of time that I find. I do bring some work upstairs so I can hang with the GF when possible. She got me a portable light/magnifier for Christmas just for that. A permanent space is the only way I can get anything done. |
CeruLucifus | 28 Dec 2011 8:41 p.m. PST |
Well, I turned a small antique secretary desk into a painting table. When closed it looks quite nice, so it is in our living room where the TV is (and where guests visit). However as said it's small and often I want to spread out for a project, or (don't tell anyone I said this) sometimes my wife's TV choice is kinda blah. So I have several trays I can set up anywhere (usually in our office but I spray in the garage and flock on the back porch). So my answer is: * it's a good idea to have a permanent painting table plus: * portable paint trays are real handy. |
