Writing in Battlegames magazine, Mike Siggins listed this as one of his hobby regrets: Always build forces for both sides
Do you collect both sides for periods you are interested in? Have you done so, and now regret it? * it's a good idea to collect both sides * it's a bad idea to collect both sides * I tried it and regret it |

*All sides* (I collect armies for the Renaissance--Italian Wars to be specific) |

I pretty much collect everything. |

Didn't build both sides twice, ended up with about $1000 in figs that for the most part have never seen the tabletop. Won't do that again. Everything that I game now, I build armies for both sides. |

I collect all the figs for both (all) sides. Same for everyone in our group. Whoever is running a game will supply all the figs and terrain – sometimes there is a need to borrow of course. |

I usually have at least one historical opponent for each army, often many. |

Always do the forcesvfor both / all sides. That way I can a) be sure they are all painted in a coherent style and b) that I am not stuck with an army without oponents should I ever for some reason be forced to change gaming groups. Cheers, Burkhard |

Both sides. But we also do the Committee approach once in a while. Eric |

Ive started to do both sides recently, since having kids. My hope is that they will want to get in to wargaming and therefore I will have forces good to go for when they are old enough. |

If your chosen game doesn't have portability, you pretty much are required to have both sides; because, nobody else will! Then you have FoW or 40K, etc. where getting opponents is much easier and both sides are not necessary. |

Up til recently have done both sides. Only ones at present that I don't are FOW (my FJ are taking too much time) and Dystopian Wars (who to get to battle my prussians). Have both for 6mm naps (brit/fre/prus), 6mm WWII (brit/germ), 6mm FWC (marine, eldar, orc, dalek, merc!) 10mm ancient (marian roman, british, dacian (any other warband based!), parthian) |

With less than universally popular periods, you have to do both sides if you ever want to have a game. The only period that our group went into where someone did not have to initially supply both sides was Flames of War. |
Saber6 | 21 Dec 2011 8:35 a.m. PST |
Always, and usually 3 or more sides |

Not with "mainstream" historicals, as we tend to get a force each, but scifi/fantasy I usually end up with 3 or 4 forces as it's my niche interest which my fellow wargamers tolerate. Likewise one of them buys all the forces for age of sail, another for ancients and so on. |
Bryan Stroup | 21 Dec 2011 9:03 a.m. PST |
Depends on group interest. If everyone is excited, we usually get single forces, but if it's an unknown, I'll collect all sides. |

Both, with the local club I go to its the only way you'll get to use them as there's only a few of us who actually put the games on

I usually build both sides. In SYW and other periods I've built both sides or contemporary powers in ancients. I did not build both sides in Napoleonics in 15mm, though. So when my opponent moved to Seattle, the gaming pretty much dried up and went away. |
Doctor X | 21 Dec 2011 9:47 a.m. PST |
Always. Everyone else is either too unreliable or not as interested enough in the period to paint anything up although they will game it. |
Sundance | 21 Dec 2011 9:47 a.m. PST |
Yup. I have unique things that no one in our game group builds, but will play, and even the things that will work together are based differently so having both sides avoids needing sabots for one side or the other. |
comstarhpg | 21 Dec 2011 10:13 a.m. PST |

I always build both sides. For many years, if I wanted to play wargames with my friends, I had to bring EVERYTHING to the table — 2 armies, rulebooks, dice, terrain, etc. |
John the OFM | 21 Dec 2011 10:18 a.m. PST |
The upside of building both sides in our group is that so does everyone else. I thus have no need to paint 15mm ACW, 15mm SYW, Ironclads, "moderns", etc. And even thought I introduced a few periods, as did others, some have been interested enough to do their own complete sides. |
Lentulus | 21 Dec 2011 10:18 a.m. PST |
it's a good idea to collect both sides I agree. It's also what I do, although part of that is because my preferred scale is not big around here. |
Big Red | 21 Dec 2011 10:23 a.m. PST |
"Been burned too many times not to do both sides anymore." Me too. What are Mr. Siggins' regrets? |
DeanMoto | 21 Dec 2011 11:16 a.m. PST |
Have with 28mm Napoleonics – French & British. That way I can always host a game without worrying. For Ancients/Medievals, I've been lucky to have a local crew with existing armies as opponents. Although I may build up more of some of my armies for "civil" types of wars. Best, Dean |
