There is a painting system for miniatures called the Army Painter system. Do you use it?

* yes, I use it
* no, but I've tried it
* no
* never heard of it
* I'm not a painter

Sysiphus19 Dec 2011 9:54 a.m. PST

no, Minwax.

DeanMoto19 Dec 2011 9:55 a.m. PST

I use Minwax (Tudor Satin) also – from what I understand, it's very similar to AP. So, a qualified "Yes, I use it." I don't use it on everything, but the method works great for production line painting – especially horses. Best, Dean

Ron W DuBray19 Dec 2011 10:24 a.m. PST

combatpainter Fezian19 Dec 2011 10:27 a.m. PST

I use washes when necessary.

TheMasterworkGuild19 Dec 2011 10:28 a.m. PST

no, but I've tried it

Huscarle19 Dec 2011 10:34 a.m. PST

Charles Marlow19 Dec 2011 10:39 a.m. PST

No, but I've tried it.

Delthos19 Dec 2011 10:41 a.m. PST

No, I use Minwax, but I have tried the Army Painter Dip that my friend bought.

Schogun19 Dec 2011 10:45 a.m. PST

No. Too expensive and I don't like the result. I do use washes though from other mfrs.

Derek H19 Dec 2011 10:46 a.m. PST

No. But I've found something that does just as good a job at about one tenth of the price. And has more colours.

ancientsgamer19 Dec 2011 10:48 a.m. PST

Now, now Derek, what is this something/ lol

whill419 Dec 2011 10:52 a.m. PST

No

Ed Mohrmann Supporting Member of TMP19 Dec 2011 10:53 a.m. PST

No

PatrickWR19 Dec 2011 10:54 a.m. PST

No. I dip occasionally but I use Minwax. Sometimes I don't dip at all. It's not a necessary part of my technique.

ming3119 Dec 2011 11:02 a.m. PST

No

Bob in Edmonton19 Dec 2011 11:05 a.m. PST

No, I use the magic dip.

Derek H19 Dec 2011 11:09 a.m. PST

Now, now Derek, what is this something/ lol

Future, and a selection of inks from an art shop.

JSchutt19 Dec 2011 11:28 a.m. PST

No. I am not a big fan of fondue either. Both seem over priced for what you get.

Thomas Whitten19 Dec 2011 11:30 a.m. PST

No, but I use the process upon which it was based.

vojvoda19 Dec 2011 11:34 a.m. PST

Minwax for me. Working on 1000 Star Wars figures over the past year has been fun and it really dresses up the figures.

Minwax here, too.

Mr Elmo19 Dec 2011 11:38 a.m. PST

I use it. I used to use Minwax but switched to Army Painter as I thought the results were better.

Greenfield Games19 Dec 2011 11:47 a.m. PST

No, but I've tried it. Actually, I tried Minwax prior to Army Painter – but it's essentially the same thing.

Striker19 Dec 2011 12:07 p.m. PST

No.

IronDuke596 Supporting Member of TMP19 Dec 2011 12:21 p.m. PST

I use something similar – minwax

CeruLucifus19 Dec 2011 12:47 p.m. PST

No.

As for their quickshade (=varnish stains = "the dip"), I've done washes for 20 years and varnish washes for 5, and never had any trouble formulating my own mixes, so their pre-mixed dip products don't really add any convenience for me. And I generally airbrush that stuff on nowadays, so a can of stain to be brushed or literally dipped is not a direction I benefit from going in.

And as for their other color spray undercoats which they call primer … well as mentioned I airbrush that type of thing nowadays.

As for their war paints, the truth is I hardly use any hobby paints, I've gone over to artist paints almost entirely. So again, not something I'm interested in.

That said, I think the customer benefits that there is an independent manufacturer of hobby paints focused on painting armies. I've looked at several of their tutorials and although I didn't feel I needed them, I can see how they add value.

Grumpy Monkey19 Dec 2011 1:25 p.m. PST

Yes, makes the terrible painter that I am into a mediocre one :)

dam040919 Dec 2011 1:38 p.m. PST

Nope. I have tries Minwax but prefer brush on inks.

Cornelius19 Dec 2011 1:55 p.m. PST

I found that no matter what I did, the gloop in the tin got gloopoier and gloopier and then solid. I am trying floor wax now – but not finding it so good.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP19 Dec 2011 2:02 p.m. PST

Nope. Use Future quite effectively and have for many years after dropping Minwax.

Cornelius, are you cutting the Floor wax with water or not?

Thanks,
John

Steve6419 Dec 2011 2:58 p.m. PST

+1 what Thomas Whitten said.

The proceess has been around for 100s of years actually. Just mix the correct tint with a glazing medium, and you are there.

Cardinal Hawkwood19 Dec 2011 3:10 p.m. PST

no

kallman19 Dec 2011 3:18 p.m. PST

No but did consider it briefly when looking at tons of ECW and ACW figures to paint. In the end I stuck with what I know and found the GW washes a nice substitute for dip without the long drying process and mess.

mrwigglesworth19 Dec 2011 3:19 p.m. PST

Yes, occasionally

idontbelieveit19 Dec 2011 3:20 p.m. PST
