and Dawghouse those who flaunt the use of the Market Place and post commercial deals straight into the topic boards…
a simple
Yes or No..
or Dawghouse the offenders and delete their post
supporing membership should mean more than just a good feeling about the supporting the forum.
I play a straight bat on this issue and won't even display pictures in the galleries if they have a commercial reference..

And by "commercial deals," you mean…?

* private offers to sell?
* public sales notices by retailers?
* new product announcements by manufacturers?

GreatScot7213 Dec 2011 7:14 a.m. PST

Yes! One of the main reasons I let my supporting membership lapse was because the Marketplace seems to have become an open house for the following:
*Sellers posting auction links in the non-auction boards.
Very annoying, and it distracts from people who are trying to use those boards for the intended purpose.
*Sellers posting a different message for each and every item they are selling, regardless of how closely related they all are and how much sense it would make to combine them into a single post out of courtesy. Often this mass of needless posting will swallow up other lone posts I might be interested in.

IGWARG1 Supporting Member of TMP Fezian13 Dec 2011 8:11 a.m. PST

Yes, I agree with Editor. Original post was not clear.

I also agree with Saxon Dog.

John the OFM13 Dec 2011 8:23 a.m. PST

No DH. Just remove the post. He does that fairly regularly.

*Sellers posting auction links in the non-auction boards.
Very annoying…

Why is it annoying? What I find annoying is the separation into Market and Auction! grin Combine them!

*Sellers posting a different message for each and every item they are selling, regardless of how closely related they all are and how much sense it would make to combine them into a single post out of courtesy.

Now, THAT I do find annoying, particularly if it drives mine off the fromt page.

Deeman13 Dec 2011 8:54 a.m. PST

Don't combine the market and auction boards. The market board provides a real draw for me because its one of he last few places were you can find someone who is offering an item for a solid price. I don't have to "follow" an item on ebay only to be outbid in the last 2 seconds. Grrr.

Sundance13 Dec 2011 9:21 a.m. PST

The one that gets me are people trying to run a commercial business from the marketplace. There were a couple of fellows who were clearly trying to do that. I think Bill gave them the boot, because it went away pretty quickly, although a couple are still borderline on the issue.

I have been surprised that non-members can so readily advertise specific items for sale including pics on the forums. I have zero issues with a blurb for a sale or new item release. That's fine. But they shouldn't be able to post pics and include a specific list of individual items.

Thanks,

John

My instinct is to say "no", but I don't know what egregious, pushy incident drove you to post this, so… Maybe. Someone needs to make the case for me, but until then I'm leaning toward no.

Tommy2013 Dec 2011 1:31 p.m. PST

Yes

Cardinal Hawkwood13 Dec 2011 1:56 p.m. PST

any thing with a price, or directing the members to a place where there is a price displayed.. for sale etc… shouldn't be in the topic bpards but in the very very very aptly named MARKET PLACE where the very aptly named supporting members have the right and duty to place posts that pertain to selling and to auctioning… Non supporting members have no right to do this , and definately no right to post their products for sale willy nilly on any topic board they see fit…
It is titled The Market Place for a very good reason and its specific use needs to be ruthlessly enforced..

Cardinal Hawkwood13 Dec 2011 1:59 p.m. PST

commercial deals= a post where the poster intends to sell an object or number of objects for gain…product announcements should be seen to be ok as they may be argued to be a service to the members

Altius13 Dec 2011 2:46 p.m. PST

Well, here's an example that might illustrate why I lean toward no. I have used my blog for commercial purposes, but sometimes I link to posts or photos there simply because I want to show what I've done. My intention is not to troll for business. I'm wondering now if some think I'm being gauche for doing so.

I also see a number of manufacturers posting shots of new products in the discussion boards. I can think of quite a few examples of that, BTW. It doesn't offend me in the least. In fact, I appreciate the eye candy. I'm still going with "no".

Now if you're referring to spammers, I would lean the other way, but I have not seen any examples of spammers hereabouts. Just my opinion amigo, but I think you're getting all cranked up over a very inconsequential thing.

Allen5713 Dec 2011 3:11 p.m. PST

Oh bother!

CPT Jake13 Dec 2011 4:56 p.m. PST

I see a bunch of new/low post count non-sponsor members advertising items for sale on the main boards and I hate it.

They must see the market place boards as they navigate to TMP, and then since they can't post to them, instead of figuring out why (they need to pay!) or worse knowing why but decide to just post their items anyway onto the main boards. It annoys me and I admit it.

John the OFM13 Dec 2011 5:57 p.m. PST

…any thing with a price, or directing the members to a place where there is a price displayed.. for sale etc… shouldn't be in the topic bpards …

Sorry, but that's not your call. It is totally up to Dear Editor, since this is his day job.

I don't think the Peanut Gallery should have any say in economic matters, since we don't make our living off TMP. Dear Editor does.

Cardinal Hawkwood13 Dec 2011 6:26 p.m. PST

you really thinks so?

John the OFM13 Dec 2011 6:46 p.m. PST

Of course I do. Why would you think I would say it if I didn't mean it?

Thsi is Bill's source of revenue. Why he bothers to ask for our opinions on something that is his job is beyond me.

Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian13 Dec 2011 6:50 p.m. PST

product announcements should be seen to be ok as they may be argued to be a service to the members

By that logic, wouldn't any sales offer be a service to the membership???

However, current policy is to nuke topics on the main wargaming forum which involve private sales. If I've missed nuking something, feel free to PM me.

"Why would you think I would say it if I didn't mean it?"

umm…three guesses and the first two don't count? ; )

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP14 Dec 2011 5:39 a.m. PST

So, small companies who don't pay to advertise can offer specific items for sale with pics? I really don't understand this position at all. I do get the generic sales blurbs or new products released. That's a good thing.

Thanks,

John

I do believe I actually agree with the Cardinal for once….
