Sword and the Flame. Thirty plus years and still the best for gaming colonials

mossdocking11 Dec 2011 12:45 p.m. PST

TSATF

where can i find a review of the mechanics?

I love TSATF, but for Rorke's Drift, you'll really want Hal Thinglum's Home Rules for that. They're on the Coloinial Wars Yahoo Group, and I have several copies if you can't join/don't want to join the group.

I used a set of rules made in 2004 originally made by the Colonial Angle (is that Hal?) to great enjoyment. You can find them in the file section of my Yahoo group dedicated to that game.

The new Warlord sets are sure making me look at rules too.

Another vote for TSATF, but with the Roy Jones & Mark Fastoto scenario book: Colonial Campaigns, The Zulu War. Lots of "special rules" for 11 AZW engagements that work well.

Second that, Chris! That's a fantastic scenario book.

'Course, I am a trifle biased since Roy and Mark are both friends of mine.

CPT Jake11 Dec 2011 4:23 p.m. PST

Where does one find that scenario book?

TSATF it was what this game was designed to do.

Pijlie, no that is Steve Winters, I think. Hal published MWAN for years and years.

On Military Matters likely has a copy.

Thanks,

I've heard of a successful convention game played using the free FAD2 ( Fast and Dirty) rules. I think someone posted about it a couple of years back, from KublaCon in California. It might be worth checking around for a link to those.

The Sword and The Flame. I think there's also a Warhammer Colonial Variant for Rorke's Drift, too. But my vote is still for The Sword and The Flame.

We have played a home brew system derived from an old board game. Made a good convention game.

You don't want TSTAF for Rorke's Drift. If you do it correctly the British rarley win. I would roll buckets full of dice at the Zulus and either got no hits or very few.

I have played the Zulus and overwhelm the Birtish, no problem. I would go with Hal Thinglum's Home Rules or "Principles of War."

You could modify TSTAF or cut down the number of Zulus. I think that is the heart of the problem, people just use too many Zulus. We in fact played one game where we halved the number Zulus and the game was very close. It always comes down to the Imperialist/Native ratio. Hard to get right.
