Would you like to see Games Workshop come out with more products in the Dreadfleet line? |
MikeHobbs | 07 Dec 2011 7:11 a.m. PST |
nope, but I would like to see them re-release the old Man O'war figures again as they are like gold dust at the moment |
nazrat | 07 Dec 2011 7:42 a.m. PST |
I would. It's a great game and it would be relatively easy (albeit expensive) to do a few new sprues with more ships on them. |
richarDISNEY | 07 Dec 2011 8:06 a.m. PST |
Sure. But I still have not heard if the game is any good

But I still have not heard if the game is any good
That is because everyone is still waiting for someone to actually buy the game. I talked to a half dozen or so different store owners and they say it is one of the worst releases that they have ever dealt with from GW. A new game which they are explicitly told that they are not supposed to demo in store, that costs $100 and that is unsupported going forward. So far, between all the stores they have sold two boxes. That was to the same guy who plans on holding on to them till GW sells out and then "selling them on eBay to make a bundle." Apparently, according to a friend who works at the warehouse in Tennessee – that doesn't look like it will be happening anytime soon. They would have been far better off to do a release of a self contained Man O'war or Battlefleet Gothic game that uses the same basic rules as the original – but could be played out of one box (like they did with Space Hulk). At least with those, there would be the nostalgic market. |

@MikeHobbs – what are you after? I'm having a sort through my Man O' War stuff ready to list some on eBay

I second the BFG reboot in one box, it would take so little effort on their part and as it ties right into a popular range (40K) then it might get some decent traction, especially with their largely pre-pubescent audience. Saying that, everyone loves pirates right? |
Space Monkey | 07 Dec 2011 12:08 p.m. PST |
I wonder why The Editor keeps asking about Dreadfleet
I wonder if maybe he 'invested' in several boxes for later resale? I'd maybe go for a reboot of Man O' War
but Dreadfleet doesn't scratch that itch. |

"That is because everyone is still waiting for someone to actually buy the game. I talked to a half dozen or so different store owners and they say it is one of the worst releases that they have ever dealt with from GW." Because six stores is a REALLY good sampling to make a judgement about a game's overall sales
Sheesh. Deal in hyperbole much? |

I've bought it, but I haven't played it; I plan to treat the ships as models more so than gaming pieces. I do know some gamers who have played it, though, and their biggest complaint is limited replayability. After you've played through the scenarios a few times, the fun tapers off. So, yes, the release of additional ships, and expecially scenarios, would be a welcome addition to the game. From everything I've read, though, that isn't going to happen. I might start trolling Ebay to pick up some additional ships, though. A few of them are usable as large ships (what we call Admiral-class ships) in Man O' War. And I agree with Mike Hobbs that a re-release of MoW would be a *very* welcome development. Release all of the rules, with some clarifications and minor rejiggering, in one new hardback, and make the ships available once again (in metal, please, not Finecast resin), and I know literally dozens, maybe hundreds, of gamers who'd buy the game. That's an even less likelihood than a Dreadfleet expansion, though. Sigh. |

People have bought it. I'm painting a set for a client right now and I just picked up another commission to paint a second set. Additionally, it's getting good ratings on Boardgamegeek: link Having said that, I do believe that GW overestimated the sales potential of the game. It's my guess that somebody thought that it was going to do Space Hulk numbers and printed accordingly. They tried to force it down retailer's throats by telling us that we were only going to have one chance to order them and we had one weekend to decide how many we wanted before we had any solid information about the game at all. Of course, now it's out there. No problems getting it because they didn't sell like hotcakes as expected. Bad game? No. Good game? Maybe. I'm almost done painting my first set but I've never even read the rules. |

Oh, and to answer the editor's question. Sure! It would probably mean more work for me. |

I have quite a bit of Man O War stuff
Some still sealed
cackles in delight! Surprised to hear the rules are so different. The ships appear to be larger in scale too. Doesn't stop anyone from doing wht they want, I suppose. The original Man O War was pretty brilliant. Flyers screwed up the game but this is an easy fix. I still have: Brettonians Empire (lots and lots, many still sealed) Dwarves (lots again) Elves Dark Elves and the rare Vikings or whatever they were called
Got rid of the Chaos and Ork stuff as I didn't care for them as much

I have all the fleets for MoW as well. We still play a few times a year and have a blast. |
Scott Kursk | 07 Dec 2011 4:26 p.m. PST |
Nazrat, hyperbole aside, as a former GW employee, the sales have been horrid and they have quite a bit in the warehouse. The only sales have been from people buying them in the hopes of making money off of them. Very few people have bought it to actually play it given that it's a one off and exceedingly limited. |
CPT Jake | 07 Dec 2011 4:50 p.m. PST |
I bought it because it was a one off, and I like it. The whole 'game in a box' thing is great, and the mat, terrain and ships are pretty cool. If expansions were ever to come out, I would consider them. I've downloaded the couple of extra scenarios GW has posted and hope to get to them over the next month or two. Jake |
mex10mm | 07 Dec 2011 4:59 p.m. PST |
It is a fun game, but I think I just like it as it is. |
kallman | 07 Dec 2011 8:40 p.m. PST |
It is a very fun game with as CPT Jake stated some beautiful stuff, and like the Battles of Five Armies set is a one off game. I find it funny that GW gets blasted for so called non support of its product(I have never understood the logic of this statement), catch flak (at least here on TMP) for continuously updating their core games, yet when they do an all in one box game such as Space Hulk and now Dreadfleet they are harangued for not coming out with expansions. You cannot have it both ways folks. |
Sane Max | 08 Dec 2011 5:33 a.m. PST |
But I WANT it both ways Waaaa!!!! I WANT GW to make endless expansions for games, but also WANT to be able to criticise them as money grubbers for producing endless expansions for games. I also WANT to predict they are about to go bust, so I can buy their stuff really really cheap on the internet, but expect if that happens I will WANT to then spend the rest of my life moaning about them going bust. Seems like I am one of the few who bought it with the intent of playing it. I have read the rules and it looks enjoyable but I haven't tried yet. The models are brilliant though. Nice details and the most well-designed plastic models I have ever built. The parts fit so well together that in many cases you don't need glue. |
nazrat | 08 Dec 2011 10:39 p.m. PST |
it's a lot of fun and I'm very glad I bought it. Anybody that did so as an "investment" deserves everything they don't get, though. 8)= |
KenofYork | 09 Dec 2011 8:51 a.m. PST |
Played a game and I am building the ships. Plastic are awesome, it is a very complete game and played pretty good. The cards tend to lose something after a few times and it seems that the random events happen too often for my liking. Still, good product and worth a look. |
Given up for good | 09 Dec 2011 1:35 p.m. PST |
Would have to agree on the sales front. I saw at least 10 boxes at Derby and two at Recon – no one was looking at them when I went by. Add to that the three GW stores I have been in that have them still for sale it sure was not a Space Hulk
For me – I'm waiting for the board to drop in price on eBay after Christmas. Some of the ships are great but the lack of a cohesive fleet put me off. I like to take sides! |
Gorkathustra | 10 Dec 2011 6:32 p.m. PST |
No, but if they rel-released Man O War I'd be on it llke white on rice
white rice though, not fried rice which is yellowey. |
Dice Monkey | 11 Dec 2011 12:45 p.m. PST |
I purchased one, played it with some of my friends for about an hour got bored then played Uncharted Seas instead. Miniatures are nice low low low replay value. Would I buy a sequel, no. |
