When painting non-symmetrical flags, do you paint the front correctly and the back as a mirror image, or both sides correctly, causing a de-synchronisation between colours on either side of the flag?

It depends on how the original flag was constructed.
If the non-symmetrical parts are sewn panels, then I mirror the reverse.
If it has painted on devices, then I paint both sides the same.
Thus, the Hessian lion rampant on AWI flags faces the same direction on both sides. I do NOT paint the lion facing the staff on both sides. It faces the left on each side.

Exactly.

Flags of different cultures and times are unique to their own practices, and looking for universal rules is to defeat your purpose for an "authentic" flag design.

Sorry, but you've got to use the "R Word."

Research.

IF the flag is painted on a single thickness of material, the reverse is in reverse. This is common on large flags. THe ANV battle honors were painted on one side only, so some items may not show through. If embroidered, normally each side is done seperately, and the flags has two thicknesses of material thus sewn together IF different things are on each side. IF same pattern on each side, may be a single thickness with embroiderery such as to be symmetrical so that items can be placed in the same location facing the proper way. Ie. a Embroidered shield is symmetric whereas the items upon the shield are not.
In short one must know how the flag was constructed, just has he must know know how it was affixed: nailed, sleeved or tied.
