I'm searching for a set of skirmish rules that would work well with Highlander clan warfare, circa 1644, although not necessarily for use with Montrose's armies. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Warlord Games (and others) exceptional range of 28mm Highlanders is the motivation here.

A century earlier and you could proably get away with a set of Medieval [late] rules. July, 1544, Blar Na Leine [Sort of Spelled semi correctly].

For 'big skirmish' how abour Warhammer ECW? Plenty of stats to tweak to differentiate between the Highland Gents and the rabble. I can't offhand remember if they have archery rules though.

I can verify that WHECW has rules for archers. I've had Highland archers kill my Parliamentarians numerous times.

I use Mordheim for Border Reivers with each player running 5-10 figures & I"d consider it for Highland clan skirmish were I doing it. I agree that WHECW should work for larger forces.

Irregular Wars maybe. They are for small battles rather than skirmishers though.
I think they are available from Vexillia. They are aimed at 15mm figs but can be easily scaled up.

How about Saga? Still reading through the rules but look like they could work.

I'd say give Once Upon A Time in the West Country a go.

Reiver Rules would work well, with the Highlands cattle raiding was endemic with the hihgland warriors being called Caterans whihc means raiders so look for somehting like that and put a tartan twist on it :0)

1) Invite your neighbors to dinner
2) Murder them

Hot Trod and Red Hand should work for cattle raids etc. It is (or was) a free set of rules for Border Reivers but should work as well for the Highlands. It includes a nice little campaign engine.
