I ordered a few of the new releases from Hinterland last Friday, and they showed up today. This most recent wave included 5 different packs of figures that follow the general concept set out with Princess Viktoria. They include three packs of sailors (one command, one 5 figure assortment, and one 6 figure firing line set), 1 set of medics (2 medics and a dog) which are wearing uniforms that match the hussars, and finally a set of cavalry to support the mounted Princess Viktoria. The figures are well detailed and proportioned – and had no perceivable casting errors. The normal sailors are armed with rifles and come in a total of 6 poses (5 in the assortment and the firing line is all of one firing pose). The command sailors show an officer with a sword and what I have been informed is a watch (though it is a large watch that might double as a Swedish Compass), there is also a sergeant with a rifle and a bugler
who appears to be younger.
The medic pack are made up of two different Hussar styled medics. They have a different cap than the regular Hussars and are unarmed, however their faithful companion – a German shephard – should be able to protect them. Each of the medics have an assortment of pouches as well as a flask or jar of tonic. These should prove useful for more conventional historical gamers as well, it was not too uncommon to see female field nurses.
The mounted figures are especially welcome. The core of the Hinterland's releases have been the Hussars so it is nice that they are finally getting some horses. Each pack includes three riders and three horses in different poses. Add into that the princess herself and you can field a small cavalry unit without fear of seeming repetitious. The riders are armed with rifles.
Overall they are shaping up to be a great little line of figures. Although not strictly historical, they are not implausible and can be a welcome diversion. For me, they will be deployed to guard the canals of Mars or some other distant planet. The service from Hinterlands is as always great. Prices are good, especially considering the niche market (under $3 per infantry figure and $6 per cavalry figure). No problems recommending them to others who are looking for something a bit different. link |

I have all the other Hinterland releases. The figures are nicely detailed, so they paint easily. This new release is on my Christmas list. Buck |

I have a few Hinterland figures and the quality of sculpting and casting is superb. |

Good review with which I fully agree except I would not call a command person in a naval unit a "sergeant." I thought she was a petty officer. I do really like that bugler -- "ship's girl." The naval unit will fit nicely into one of my Very British Civil War contingents. Perhaps, Women's Institute Naval Auxiliary. Royal Navy Women's Reserve Squadron? May need to convert one to a sub-machine gun. Lewis, even a BAR seems too big for the ladies. My order came in just a couple days of posting. Fine service for a fine product. |

I would not call a command person in a naval unit a "sergeant." I thought she was a petty officer. Not familiar with Imperial German Naval ranks
so I went with sergeant. Was going to say NCO, but changed my mind. I do really like that bugler -- "ship's girl." Not seen in the pictures, but she has pigtails sticking out from under her hat. May need to convert one to a sub-machine gun. Lewis, even a BAR seems too big for the ladies. In the regular Hussars, there is one in the Skirmishers pack who is a bit "bigger boned". I am swapping her rifle out with a Maxim style gun and putting the feed in a back pack. Sort of the VSF version of an XM214
for clearing out alien bug infestations. |

I hope that they continue to make mounted figures so that I can get a righteous unit of the Hussars afoot & ahorse. I also wish that they'd offer a pack of Trench Raider Riflewomen so that I can have a proper GASLIGHT unit to defend my evil VSF Mastermind. |

Perhaps I need some of these to fight my Belle Zouaves de Butte Monmartre. GRelber |

I converted my trench raiders from picklehelb to helmet for use in VBCW, BUF women's auxiliary. I second Spurious that we need a rifle unit.

I received my order a few days ago- 12 cavalry, 27 infantry and a dog. I'm really pleased with the sailors and the cavalry are great- the sidesaddle poses are really well done. I've purchased every Hinterland release and they just keep getting better. I just hope I can get 'em painted up before the next batch of open-handed cavalry. I'll need some with lances, some with sabers, some with pistols

When will I get a chance to game with your great looking Hinterland figures and vehicles dr Mathis??? Maybe the next Recruits?? I am very tempted by the sailors. I think they would make an excellent Zeppelin crew don't you

Funny you should mention it, but both of my VSF mad scientists have female bodyguards/assistants as well. Doctor Maton has a mysterious Celestial woman protecting him, and Doctor Vardu has a stocky Germanic woman. No MP40, though. IT's not Goldfinger, after all. |

Thanks to Scout for posting this review, and thanks to everyone for the warm comments. I know some of you will be very pleased to know that the next set of releases will include an open-handed cavalrywoman, and another set of Trench Raiders, armed with rifles. Hinterland has been a blast so far, in large part due to an enthusiastic core of followers. – Jason |

and another set of Trench Raiders, armed with rifles. Unfortunately, that means I will probably have to switch them to be two distinct armies then. Ah well, you can never have too many girls with guns. |
