When you have an interest in a particular war or period, do you tend to collect just one army, or do you tend to collect both/all sides of the conflict?

cfielitz28 Nov 2011 6:07 p.m. PST

yes

1812 Gamer28 Nov 2011 6:09 p.m. PST

Both sides!

John the OFM28 Nov 2011 6:11 p.m. PST

When I started out in miniatures gaming, I did. Frankly, it was because no one else was interested in the period, so I HAD to do both sides.
This survives to this day, in that when when I "do" a NW Frontier game, I supply everything. When I *do* 25mm AWI, I do both sides.
Many are descendants and survivers from the 70s and 80s.

Today, if I can't get someone else interested, fugeddaboutit.
I only did Flames of War because I was assured of "logical" opponents. I have no need to memorize the annoyingly diverse sidkafizzes because my opponent already did.

cloudcaptain28 Nov 2011 6:11 p.m. PST

Yes…best way to ensure someone will game it with you. You provide all the figs :)

Yes. I like painting, and I like less well known theaters.

peru52200028 Nov 2011 6:11 p.m. PST

yep

Pictors Studio28 Nov 2011 6:13 p.m. PST

Yes. I have to to make sure that I can keep up with the arms race. For some periods, like WWII, I don't have to but for most of them I do.

I am the mongo28 Nov 2011 6:14 p.m. PST

I always have to collect both side as I am limited in how far I am willing to travel to game and I am located in the hinter-boonies of rural Grayson county in Tejas.
My gaming opponents consist of one ol high school buddy his son and two of my chilrens.

galvinm28 Nov 2011 6:14 p.m. PST

yep.

Mako1128 Nov 2011 6:18 p.m. PST

Yes, since not doing so means they may just sit idly, otherwise, without opponents.

I learned this the hard way when I moved to Chicago some 23 years ago and found I often had one side in a scale no one else was playing. The only forces I had with both sides were 25 mm ACW and micro-armor. Now I make sure I get both sides so I'm not odd man out.

mbsparta28 Nov 2011 6:25 p.m. PST

Both sides … always

Ron W DuBray28 Nov 2011 6:31 p.m. PST

Always !!

Whatisitgood4atwork28 Nov 2011 6:45 p.m. PST

At least two sides for every period. Often more.

VonBlucher28 Nov 2011 6:50 p.m. PST

Both Sides

Ambush Alley Games28 Nov 2011 6:50 p.m. PST

Definitely both sides!

Both sides.

KSmyth28 Nov 2011 7:01 p.m. PST

Usually. The stuff I do is goofy enough that it's hard to get anybody to leap out of the plane with me.

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP28 Nov 2011 7:10 p.m. PST

Pretty much.

bloodeagle28 Nov 2011 7:15 p.m. PST

Both if I can justify it.

jdpintex28 Nov 2011 7:17 p.m. PST

Usually.

dglennjr28 Nov 2011 7:21 p.m. PST

When I started out, no. But, over the years, as gamers came and went with their miniatures, I found out that if I wanted to play the game periods that I like, I had better paint both sides.

Now, when I start a new era, I always buy both sides. (or more. I.E.: For my WWII miniatures, I have US, UK, Russian, German and Japanese forces.)

chuck05 Fezian28 Nov 2011 7:23 p.m. PST

sure

The G Dog Fezian28 Nov 2011 7:35 p.m. PST

At least enough to provide a game. Others may field their own forces, but I'll have my primary faction plus an Op Force.

BrianW28 Nov 2011 7:38 p.m. PST

Yes, and like dglennjr, sometimes more. For WWII I have Soviet, German, and am painting UK, and US with Japanese and Romanian on the "to do" list. I have some of those painted, but not enough to play with, yet.

Indeed.

Wizard Whateley28 Nov 2011 7:50 p.m. PST

You bet.

(Leftee)28 Nov 2011 8:01 p.m. PST

Yes, with all my historicals. More for my own sense of completion rather than a need for opponents.

The only time hasn't been necessarily was with WH and WH40K though enjoy building/painting other armies for them too.

corporalpat28 Nov 2011 8:16 p.m. PST

Is there any other way?

Von Ewald28 Nov 2011 8:30 p.m. PST

Always.

1815Guy28 Nov 2011 8:33 p.m. PST

both sides

I'd love to say… No…
But reality contradicts me.

cavcrazy28 Nov 2011 9:33 p.m. PST

Right now I'm painting and collecting AWI units, I have Continentals, Hessians, Loyalists, British, Indians, and I am looking to get the French very shortly…..That way when I host a game or do a show, I only have to rely on myself….And if I paint everything, then everything matches.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP28 Nov 2011 9:45 p.m. PST

Often but it can depend on the scale and period.

Thanks,

John

nazrat28 Nov 2011 9:46 p.m. PST

Almost all my friends have bailed on gaming, and the few that haven't unfortunately can't afford a lot of miniatures right now. So yeah, it's almost all me if I want forces to game with.

21eRegt28 Nov 2011 9:50 p.m. PST

Almost always. Only time I haven't is when someone talks up a period and already has, or is building one side. Though I usually slip and paint some "just in case xyz can't make it."

Gonsalvo28 Nov 2011 10:16 p.m. PST

Absolutely. Learned long ago that trusting another guy to do it, no less on time, no matter how much he said he would, was usually a losing proposition!

Toaster28 Nov 2011 10:52 p.m. PST

Both? I've been known to collect all 9 sides and climbing (yes Full Thrust I'm looking at you).

I learned my lesson about 25 years ago.
Now I collect both sides of anything I do because others either never follow through, lose interest, or just weren't that interested in the first place.
This way I can play whenever I want and people not that interested are more willing to play as long as all they have to do is show up and roll dice.
