If you wanted to meet women at a gaming convention, what would be the best convention game to run? Miniature wargaming, of course

The twiglet Saga – sexy vampires hunt innocent sexy women
Or Space Vixens from Venus hunt Bug Eyed monsters from Mars. Hot pirates from the Spanish main seeks mate. Gladiator – I mean ladies love men with oiled skin, and firm muscles, and brief loincloths that display
.. I give up, I assume that this question was asked with a sense of humour, Are there women at gaming conventions? I think these are some form of mythical beast that are in the same category as the bandersnatch and Dragons. |

Funny enough
at games tores and more mixed venues (SF/Fantasy Cons)
it really isn't hard to meet women. For a game
zany subjects tend to draw the ladies in. Kaiju games with tongue in cheek rules, Hello kitty 40k
.and that Rorke's Drift with the Spongebob characters (which one of us did that?) would all be great starts. The key is to be flashy, have fun, and don't take it too seriously. The only problem with true wargame cons is that most women there are attached
.so steer easily into those waters :) |

How about the cosmetic products league versus the invasion of giant handbags? I imagine the OGRE rules might work well, or HotT perhaps? Or maybe 'Handbags at Dawn' Each player empties contents of handbag onto the table, that then form the armies for each side. Perfume atomizers have good ranged fire capabilities, squeezy creams less so, lipsticks are melee only. The handbags gobble up all cosmetics they can move into contact with if the cosmetics fail a saving throw. A handbag v handbag melee is truly a battle of the titans, often deciding the game. On the other hand pro-painted wargames armies are probably cheaper

There seems to be an inordinate amount of ladies playing Malifaux at our local game store on Friday nights. |

Pirate games are a chick magnet, for some unknown reason. |

Pulp fiction or Steampunk games involving scantily clad Amazons empowering themselves by taking charge in matters of procreation and domination. Hunky explorers accompanied by comic relief sidekicks being the opposition. Make sure there is a big-screen TV or projection system nearby playing "She" and "Cannibal Women of the Avocado Jungle of Death" types of movies for "mood enhancement." |
Mr Pumblechook | 28 Nov 2011 3:30 p.m. PST |
Being serious, theming the game to a movie (developing John's idea) such as Pirates of the Carribean that women are likely to have seen and enjoyed, and having a small group of characters/figures that they can take over and 'do stuff like they saw in the movie' is probably a good start. |

I have had women play in my Pirate games, and VSF and Pulp games. They prefer skirmish/small unit level best with scenarios that have a narrative story-like nature to them. |

Seriously – anything that involves LEGO. Girls play with Lego, or at least, have fond memories of doing so. Failing that, one could always try something REALLY crazy, and actually ASK the ladies – "So, what would you like to play?" But for many gamers, that would involve the terror of speaking to a genuine female of the species who isn't their Mum
|
Ed Mohrmann | 28 Nov 2011 5:04 p.m. PST |
Hmmmm
'Booty Call' (pirate game. Two pirate crews, one of which is 100 % female, vie for treasure). 'Temperance Tantrum' game set in Iowa, 1890's. The ladies of Millersville are REALLY upset about the saloon which has opened in their town and set out to close it down, marching from the church to the saloon. This game is designed for women only, although a few men can play (comic relief). Features Carrie Nation, Nelly Bly, and other notable ladies of the period. 'That ain't no way to treat a Lady !' (subtitle - 'Sufferin' Gents') Nancy, Lady Astor, comes to Iowa to support the drive for Women's Sufferage. The Ladies of the town turnout in support to hear her speak – but who are those ne'er do-wells in the back of the crowd, and why are they carrying torches in broad daylight ??? Another game for women, with a few spots for courageous (or stupid ?) guys

I've seen the most girls at a zombie style post-apocalypse game at a con. I think perhaps a Hello Kitty 40k game with pink space marine armor and space elves might do the trick, but as Macrossmartin said, "So, what would you like to play?" In my house, it would be, "No wargame, no how, no way!" |

It would probably have to be a home-based, historical game based upon Imelda Marcos' lifelong quest to corner the world's shoe market
. Another would be some type of game related to acquiring diamonds and other expensive jewelry. |

I once signed up my 9 year old son and myself for a Broadsides and Boarding Parties game at a Cold Wars. On my side was a tall va-va-va-voom blonde. She was TELLING me how I should support her in the battle, with her hand lightly on my shoulder. That might have worked if my son was not there. However, blood was thicker than
well, you know. Having said that, going to a wargaming convention to pick up chicks is delusional at best. A historical one, that is. |

For some reason chicks go crazy for the First Sikh War or anything involving Burgundians. |

The G Dog | 28 Nov 2011 7:43 p.m. PST |
For some reason chicks go crazy for the First Sikh War That does not track with my experience. The ladies do enjoy a Monty Python game (well the COOL ones do!) or Junta. Nothing brings out the cuthroat impulses like Junta
except for Dippy. |

You may not know this, but Columbus, Ohio is the corporate headquarters for Victoria's Secrets. Many of the models go to Origins and play First Sikh Wars. Most have their own armies. |

Build a table with lots of little details like cats chasing mouse, people in the village doing their jobs etc. Woman like to watch an "oh look at that table". Do something from a movie: pirates, musketeers, or semi historical: steam punk, victoriana. Lots of nice clothes on figs, less modern uniforms. Have woman figures on the table. Run a participation game in which kids can play. |

Within the convention provenance the Homo sapien sub species: "long suffering spouse" do put in an appearance. Generally, the best way to gain their attention is to give directions to the nearest shopping centre where reasonable levels of "retail therapy" can be obtained! regards Allan |
Oh Bugger | 29 Nov 2011 3:51 a.m. PST |
"Most have their own armies." Indeed they do and everytime they throw a six they writhe uncontollably screaming Khalsa Ji! Its quite unsettling -1 but good for morale +1. Once upon a time I saw a lovely young woman playing a historical game at a wargames club. This apparently was at her own voalition. In every way she was very desirable and she played with toy soldiers. That was once in 35 years. Work it out. |

Most of my female friends that willingly play games, do not go to conventions. So good luck with that. But if they did, I'd say something along the lines of Super Dungeon Explore, Malifaux, or a game with a lot of thick theme or anime styling. In my age group (Mid-late 20's), anime has a lot of following amongst females. |
Atomic Floozy | 29 Nov 2011 7:41 a.m. PST |
I've only attended a few conventions here in Texas. The ones that attracted me & the few other women players I've met at conventions were games that required few miniatures like dungeon crawls, pirate games, Dr. Who, westerns with TRWNN, pulp games like THW's Larger than Life, & this year I did see two ladies playing in a gladiator game. I think I've only ever seen one lady other than myself play in a massed combat game with large armies. |

Anything with a "cute" factor or with women miniatures in it. Gnome Wars at SF had females in it though most were kids. Ed Mohrman mentioned the Pirate game already. There is a WWI flying game I've seen at Cold Wars that seems to attract women. It is the one where each player actually has a flight console. |

Thank God I'm not, and never was, that desperate to 'meet women'. I used to use pubs, clubs, and other places where normal people meet. |

I ran an Old west game where a young lady wanted to play my grandson's girlfriend. She spent the whole game at the livery stable, looking after his horse. Dudley Do-Right, anyone? Seriously, it's hard enough getting a quorum for a reasonably large game from the male population without trying to draw women besides. I have had a woman show an interest in the game, but it was a case of an existing interest in the period. |
