WoW! Looking at the OBAT for Borodino, I saw the Duke of Wurtemburg attached to the General staff. While fellow soldiers from Wurtemburg were invading Russia, having the Duke posted there has got to have quite a story behind it! |

Amazing reference; I have already used the Borodino OOB for some details for the game we're planning for next year, but the graphic presentation of all the details is superb
and will save me from having to do it! :-) |

Jonathan's fine work has been available for years--this is just an excellent update to his previous effort. |

I believe the Duke was Alexander's uncle, if I'm not mistaken. |

There were two generals von Württemberg with the Russian army at Borodino 1. Commander of the 4th infantry division and "shef" of the Tavricheskiy grenadier regiment
. Major General Prinz Eugen Friedrich Karl Paul Ludwig von Württemberg (1788-1857) -- Prinz Eugen and the Russian Emperor were (first) cousins. Eugen's aunt (father's sister) was Aleksandr's mother. -- Prinz Eugen was the nephew of Herzog (to 1803) / Kurfürst (to 1806) / König (to 1816) Friedrich Wilhelm Karl von Württemberg (1754-1816), the ruler under the occupation by /alliance with the French. 2. Military Governor of Belorussia, attached à la suite to the headquarters of the 1st Western army
. General of Cavalry Herzog Alexander Friedrich Karl von Württemberg (1771-1833) -- Herzog Alexander was the brother-in-law of the Russian Emperor -- he was also the brother of Herzog/Kurfürst/König Friedrich von Württemberg and the uncle (father's brother) of Prinz Eugen 3. Another brother of Herzog/Kurfürst/König Friedrich von Württemberg (and hence brother-in-law of the Russian Emperor) had served as a Russian general of cavalry, "shef" of the Life-Guard hussar regiment and Military governor of Riga : Herzog Ludwig ("Louis") Friedrich Alexander von Württemberg (1756-1817). Herzog Louis returned to Württemberg in 1807 and then commanded the "Garde und Haustruppen" at the palaces in Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg. - Sasha |
