A Good-Looking Army in a Reasonable Amount of Time

Painting a wargaming army is a completely different beast from painting a single miniature for display.

So there are several sprues of machine-guns and related available.

And there are bits available for Battletech sized mechs that should work as well.

I just get the feeling that I am missing something along the way.

I am considering some GW bits as well.

Just, >shrug< any ideas?

Mechwarrior clix are a gold mine for such things.

What scale are carwars vehciles?

Rottenlead24 Nov 2011 3:59 a.m. PST

I think the original Car Wars was 6mm 1/285th or also 1/300th.

Some people play it in the Matchbox / Hotwheels car scale of 20mm which is 1/72.

Here are some old 6mm of mine from GAmes Workshops Battlecars range.

Timecast Miniatures in the UK have now got some 6mm architectural model cars which are ideal for general use and could be converted to have guns on in 6mm.

For further viewing I have a 6mm gallery on Flickr here: link

If you go with Matchbox scale and can find some old weapon sprues from GW's "Dark Future" 20mm car combat game, they look great.

Also, alot of 1/72 scale plastic figure kits have separate machine gun teams that could be cannibalized. Expensive if you have to buy the kits, but if you've got any lying around…

You're doing Car Wars in 15mm scale?

AVAMANGO24 Nov 2011 8:37 a.m. PST

It sounds like its gonna be a blast, if you need a road system just get a Tomica early learning toy one for around £10.

Talk to someone who has done a lot of Flames of War armies for himself and friends, and who never throws leftover bits away.
"I might need that some day!"
Just as an example, when assembling the T28E1/M15 GMC, I had the plastic US halftrack sprue. I get a leftover .30 cal MG and .50 cal AA MG. Not only that, I have a choice of front winches! From one blister!

If I wasn't clear it is CarWars like Weapons for 15mm Vehicles.

I am building Post Apocalyptic automobiles in 15mm, And yes I am more than tempted to do a few games of CarWars in that scale.

Though to be honest I am playing with lots of vehicles in sizes of Cars and Bikes which is mostly what I am referring to when I say Automotive.

The core templates are basically 1:2 to 1:3 rectangles 1/2", 3/4" and 1". your average Jeep/Compact car is 1/2" wide by 1" long.

Now if these seem small in comparison to military vehicles, they are. Most Military vehicles are based on Truck Chassises.

Most of the SF Vehicle models tend to be on the large size of those Truck Chassies, i am working inside these parameters.

Which brings me around to the weapons Automotive scale weapons are nearly the same scale as personel scale weapons. In that a SAW is probably the core weapon one would use a automotive machine gun mount. Which in 15mm is small….

So looking right is more important than absolute scale.

infojunky24 Nov 2011 10:54 a.m. PST

So what I am really saying who gots a good suggestion for bits… Scale isn't so much a issues as looking right at 15mm.

cloudcaptain24 Nov 2011 5:14 p.m. PST

Tomica is showing up at Tueday Morning stores here in the states now.

infojunky24 Nov 2011 10:31 p.m. PST

Hummm, may have to cross the bay and look…

Edit, there is one even closer….. Just not in a city I often in…

Little Big Wars25 Nov 2011 9:52 p.m. PST

That's an awesome road set… just can't find it in stateside webstores. Toys-R-Us has a fair bit of the rest of the line though…

I have a few, and I'm working on more. Shapeways is expensive in small amounts because of a fixed set-up cost, but if you would like to tell me how many of which item you want, I can bundle it into a single item for you and make it more economical:

Some examples:

I'm also working on some modular turrets, rocket pods, etc. Anything in particular you want to see?

Thanks,

I will have some missile racks on the site tomorrow with a bit of luck, just trying to catch up with some orders.

The other items are taking a bit longer than expected due to the full time job going from 40/45 hours a week last year, to an average of 60 a week so far this year.

But there is plenty on the way.

@Javelin98 – Off the top of my head…

.30 Cal Machine Gun
.50 Cal Machine Gun
Flame Thrower
Some sort of rear facing mine or oil dispenser?
Missile Rack with RPGs

Javelin98 put together a set of car bits for me at Shapeways – they look great!

Nice!

Apparently there's going to be a kickstarter for a new edition of the game – with less detailled rules (I gather from comments on the OGRE BGG entry)

malleman that is outstanding….

On the topic of Car Wars, I have produced a line of 15-20mm modular road sections for several years and just last week added an elevated highway line of products. I took them to a convention over the weekend to show them off and almost everyone said "they'd be perfect for Car Wars". I had not envisioned them being used for Car Wars, but now that everyone told me they'd be perfect, I'd have to agree. You can check them out and decide for yourself at

AllenRockwell: etsy from that link is saying 'This Item is Unavailable' tho' it's showing some tapes as other possibilities. Those the ones you mean?

I did have some micro MicroMachines that were close to original Car Wars scale. All light colored, I just fine-point-marker added weaponry.

A couple of van bristled with roof turrets.

Hey Beast,

The etsy link was from malleman not AllenRockwell.
And malleman's link is nearly two years old to boot.
