I bought some Skytrex riverine boats at 'Warfare' in Reading as the display models looked excellent in a forest green scheme. I rather assumed I'd be doing them in Vallejo Brown Violet (i,e WW2 olive drab) – I've got lots of that – but informed comment on this site and the wider web suggests the US boats were 'green'. However the colour pics (few and far between) show this as a very dark green. A couple look like olive drab but the pictures have that old look to them which makes everything look a bit browner than it is. Some boats seem to be pale grey – the South Vietnamese manned ones? Thoughts please – the one constant is that the lifebelts are always red ! |

I did mine in a very deep green. I can't remember the brand, however, I think it was called something like Marine Corp Green. |

I've read that they were painted "Marine Green", which struck me as odd seeing as they are Navy (and sometimes Army) craft. seeing as the Skytrex boats are 20mm (and I am soooo jealous of you right now!) a little bit of scale correction should perhaps try Vallejo Gunship Green. If it isn't dark enough, maybe German Reflective Green (though it will be very dark) |

Read a discussion about this on another site ( can't remember the name, unfortunately) but it was clear that this question is almost impossible to answer to anyone's satisfaction. On the one hand a PBR still in existence but out of the water was clearly a lighter green than any photo from the Vietnam era. One view put forward was that the humid climate and boats being 'wet' appeared to darken the green in the same way a road looks darker when wet. Not much help in answering the question but it does appear to be a question that has been asked often without a definitive answer. |

Imensely useful – thank you all so much. What I think I am seeing and hearing are opinions and pictures on what it might have been and probably was, which at least gives me a target area of colour/s to aim for (and also by virtue of that help allows me rule out what it wasn't). What comes across is that I need to look at something 'greener' than WW2 OD. I'll look at the Vallejos recommended above and make an allowance for scale. Some useful insight into stowage in the pics above (and a red lifebelt!) When they are painted up I'll try and get pics uploaded. Thanks again – further info and pictures still very much welcome. |
