I was wondering how people game in the Star Wars Universe and my main focus is on tabletop gaming?

For example I use the Star Wars collectible gaming figures that were made by Wizards of the Coast.

I've actually ran 2 different games from the Star Wars movies at local conventions over the last several years.

My very first one was The Battle of the Grassy Plains where the Gungans fought the Droid Army.

In this game I have in my own personnel collection over 400 Gungan figures, including JAR JAR BINKS,Captain Tarpals and a Custom Boss Nass figure.

For the Droids I have over 500 Battledroids in addition for the game I have 3 AAT's,2 Gungan Catapults and a Fambaa.

I've run the game at least 6 times with the Gungans winning 3,the Droids winning 2 times and 1 draw.

Now the other game I do is The Geonosis Arena Battle where you have over 50 Jedi against a whole lot of Battledroids,Super Battledroids and others.

All of these figures are in my personnel collection.

So how do you game Star Wars on the table?

And please post only about what the topic is about and nothing else,as I want to stay on topic as much as possible.

Hello Capt. Gideon,
We play our battles using the WOTC figs with a couple of Imperial Guard Walkers thrown in.
Most of ours are done on the battle maps that were(are) available with the game.
It is amazing how large you can go with the battle system.
Have fun,Clif

I prefer fleet battles:

However, I do use a lot of the WOTC ships for these battles…

Did you use all 500 Battle droids in your games?

WOW

Captain Gideon21 Nov 2011 10:16 a.m. PST

Dervel nice picture the smoke adds to the overall look of the game.

Inari7 the answer to your question is yes I did use all 500 Battledroids in my Grassy Plains games,I also recycle as well since the Droids just keep coming.

Besides the Battledroids I also have several Destroyer Droids and Battledroids on STAP which I use in the game as well.

Blasters & Bulkheads, "warband" size ground skirmish (although the henchmen groups can easily let you put 50+ figs out on one side, versus 4-5 heroes on the other. Used to do fighter combat with Silent Death. Capital ships never interested me.

leidang21 Nov 2011 10:57 a.m. PST

They pretty much only have that chess like hologram boardgame so I would guess you play that. Just don't beat a wookie!

The G Dog Fezian21 Nov 2011 11:06 a.m. PST

Most of my Star Wars gaming was Star Wars Battlefront I and II on the trusty old PS2.

Mako1121 Nov 2011 11:15 a.m. PST

I've played the WOTC rules with the CMG minis, and they seem to work just fine. We add in the occasional house rule, to make them a bit more interesting.

Dogfights with the Micromachines fighters too, just for grins, using house rules.

I have the old Star Wars Minis rules, but haven't used them yet, since I didn't have painted minis at the time. May have to give them a try, eventually, since they are supposed to be pretty good.

FUBAR looks like a decent option too.

Yea, the Capital Ships games have never really inspired me for Star Wars, since they appear to be just slogging matches, with little maneuver, e.g. Wooden Sailing Ships in Space.

I've been wanting to do a game of Tie Fighters pursuing a Rebel Blockade Runner though, and/or the Millenium Falcon vs. Tie Fighters, just for fun. For those, I'll probably use the Micromachines fighters, and then the larger plastic ships for the others, e.g. the Action Fleet Falcon, and the large Blockade Runner toy.

In one of the Alt History boards I read, someone had a 'what-if' SW clashed with 40k. Both have big ships, Psykers and a fanatical devotion to their respective Emperors. No one expects the Jedi/Sith/Inquisition!! :)

With Dervel; I'm a vacchead at heart. Funny anatomy that…

I generally prefer RPG type games be they with figures or computer games (including FPS type games).

Space combat second and ground combat third, although SW Battlefront was quite good fun.

vojvoda21 Nov 2011 12:48 p.m. PST

I do Hoth and Ice planets. I also do Space with X Wings and Tie fighters. It is now my main genre these days as I have started over in the Hobby. I have Punic and Pirates and some Vietnam that I can't paint them fast enough. But back on point I use home rules that I wrote over the course of the last three years. For ground combat I am still looking at the turn sequence. I had it pretty basic but like the card idea from the original board game.

The air or space as the case may be is home brew. I have made many flight stands about 24(48 inches) and compressed stats mostly from wookiepedia on flight performance of different craft. The number of maneuvers and firepower is different for each type. Turn sequence is determined by a roll for each craft. You can get locked in trail of a fighter if you make your roll.

I have done wargame design and been in the hobby almost 45 years now. I think I am on to something and will post it to my blog for free I hope by New Years. I am really waiting to see the new X Wing game due out this month.

Never done it… but Hoth is a dirty gaming dream I sometimes think about.

FoxtrotPapaRomeo21 Nov 2011 2:00 p.m. PST

Got heaps of cheap WOTC minis figures/ships and Star Wars Titanium ships and flyers. Supplemented with AT43, dust tactics and 40k land forces, Robotech robots and Space Cruiser Yamato "ships". Formed fanciful armies – Rodian, Wookie/ewok/AT-43 Karman (ape) heavy infantry corps, Jawa mechanized company, Naboo light speeder corps and space wing, Mon Calamari fleet and expeditionary corps, Chiss/Duros (the blue races) … as well as the usual suspects and others I can't remember offhand. House rules. Have fun.

Yeah, I game it in 28mm, 18-20mm and 10mm. I ran Hoth with the Dirtside Variant about a decade ago. I tend to use Forge of war with my 28mm figs. My recent favorite has been doing the Clone Wars in 20mm using Fubar (slightly modified). We run smaller games of a couple 100 figs and 20-30 vehicles on the tabletop. The smaller scale allows for larger battles to be fought on a normal sized table.

I've seen pics of Captain Gideon's battle on Naboo. Wow! It was a massive battle and very cool!
thumbs up

I use a combination of the WOTC miniatures and the WEG miniatures.

We've had battles on Hoth, Tatooine (Spaceport scenario), Yavin 4, and Endor.

Now that I have the figures and vehicles, next up is to do the Battle of Grassy Plains on Naboo (Gungan vs. Droids), Battle of Theed (Naboo security forces vs. droids), Battle of Geonosis (Droids vs. Clones), and Battle of Kashyyyk (Wookies & Clones vs. Droids).

wehrmacht21 Nov 2011 3:19 p.m. PST

We essentially stick to the canon of the first three movies (OK, "episodes 4, 5 and 6") and like to game both on land and in space.

For land-based battles we use a modified version of the Star Wars Miniature Battles rules (on "real" terrain) and mostly use the SWMB pre-painted figures, some washed with inks.

For space battles we use a modified version of the Star Wars Starship Battles rules and some SWSSB ships, but mostly use capital ships from Micro Machines, the Titanium series and Odyssey slipways, with "fleet-scale" fighters from Stringvest/Studio Bergstrom.

Lotsa neat battle reports and photos on the blog links!

Mostly 30mm WotC CMG figures.

Themes…
Hoth (fully explored)
Bespin (fully explored)
Tatooine (a few games)
Naboo (collected but rules TBD)
Genosios Arena…arena has yet to be built and gunship(s) acquired.
Escape from the Death Star (collected but rules TBD)

I also have various WotC and Micro Machines starships but rules TBD.
I have toyed with an action figure Death Star game, but unsure if I'll ever follow through.

Games that friends run…
FUBAR for Star Wars
Wings of War homebrew TIE fighter/X-Wing combat
Star Grunts II Star Wars urban action

(I have the WEG figures, but just as collectibles.)

richarDISNEY22 Nov 2011 8:04 a.m. PST

just SW Silent death games, the x wing kicks ass.

dglennjr23 Nov 2011 7:10 a.m. PST

Captain Gideon

For my game (Grassy Plains) I plan to run, I have a mix of about 120 Gungans, 3 Gungan Catapults (Kenner Action figure toy) and 2 Faamba. (big, Action fleet, remote control toys)I'd like to have more of the Gungan shield bearers and Kaadu cavalry, but it's hard to get a lot of them due to price. I may have to make some custom shields for my shieldless troops and no good answer for the cavalry. For the Trade Federation, I have about 160 battle droids and super battle droids, with an assortment of additional droid destroyers, STAP's and such. Also part of the droid army are 3 AAT's (Action fleet toy) and 3 MTT's (Action fleet toy).

Expect my email on friday.

Thanks

Next Feb I'll be running my Geonosis Arena Battle game at a local convention called Dundracon in San Ramon Calif.

Captain Gideon

Dasher14 Sep 2013 9:49 p.m. PST

Dear Captain Gideon:
We use the West End games "Star Wars Miniatures Battles" rules and both the WEG miniatures, WotC pre-painted figures and pretty much any sci-fi figures anyone cares to write up stats for – Stephen Crane and Paul Murphy always maintained they wanted people to be able to play with any figures they had using the rules – indeed, I have long since converted my GW Eldar for use in SWMB.
I enjoy playing the game at any level, and I especially like designing scenarios with realistic victory conditions as opposed to simply throwing out matching point value forces in endless meeting engagements. We rarely worry about equal points, since most of our games have levels of victory based on mission parameters. For instance, an assault force being sent against a prepared position usually gets twice as many SGPs as the defender, and levels of victory are determined after the battle. ( World War II games like "PanzerBlitz" and "Panzer Leader" are very handy for inspirations for designing scenarios like this, as are the excellent "Skirmish" supplements ronm Skirmish Campaigns ( skirmishcampaigns.com ) .
The largest game I have run ( to date ) is a 1-to-1 scale "Battle of Hoth" in 28mm at an HMGS convention and at my home. The table is 6' wide by 22' long, with about 325+ figures all told. To streamline play for conventions, I used West End's "Assault on Hoth" boardgame for the TO&E, general map composition, special rules and initiative. All combat and movement is resolved using the SWMB rules, with additional special rules and variants of my own.
As of this writing ( September 14, 2013 ) , it's set up in my basement for the next time my game club gets a bunch of players together. Ideally, I'd like to use Google+ to allow some faraway friends to participate, as well.
One of these days I may make good on my threat to model the "Battle for Endor", but if I do, I will follow the original movie plot and set in on the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyk… although a sculptor friend was kind enough to make me some greens of "Dead Ewoks". :- )

I'm working on a TW variant now, haven't tested it yet. I've played Star Wars several times using 5150 by THW with great success!

I'd love to do the Naboo Security forces vs. Battle Droids in an urban setting, but I don't have near enough Naboo Security troops for that…

Ive been working on collecting several different ranges of 28mm figures to Old Republic style games , the history of the SW universe really gets me excited as there is so much more to just the current six films .
The Star Wars Guide to Warfare ( Jason Fry ) has been a constant source of inspiration as well as some podcasts ive listened to recently .
Using the Old republic ive been able to use whatever figures ive already got and paint them up appropriately , although not perfect they do look the part .Sourcing figures from GW40K , VOID ,WOTC, Sci Fi Panzer Grenadiers and others to use as my forces and several vehicles has meant quite a collection in bits. Will most likely use FUBAR or Tomorrows War for rules.I wish someone somewhere would make some decent SW figures to use in 28mm, although the WOTC do work very well with a simple repaint. Ive also run a "bounty hunter " type game set on Tattooine using the Songs of Blades and heroes sci fi supplement , Mutants and Death Rays. It went along almost like an RPG where each players "crew" had to achieve various mission unknown to the other players and return to their docking bay. Sometimes they would interact with each other on the table , it went really really well and I am currently in process of painting up more civilians to make it more difficult for the players to find their bounty on the table , each player drew a random card and it stated the mission on it and a brief description , it worked particularly well if you were a bit of a gaming nerd and knew the difference between a GW Kroot and a VOID Junkers ( that's just an example )so you could chase your quarry down on the table , I had two player's control all the NPC's and civilians on the table . The large WOTC based figures moving around made great moving obstacles and droids a plenty just wandering around , can you imagine a converted Eldar Scout riding a Bantha ? . It all worked relatively well with the simple SOBH rules we used , the only change I made was I doubles the three range bands to help things move along quickly . I would really like to see other peoples work on this sort of tabletop gaming as it greatly interests me allot more than the current meta out there for Sci Fi gaming cheers Tom

Lee33722 Sep 2015 9:38 p.m. PST

I've been playing Clone Wars era battles using WoTC minis and Action fleet vehicles with transformmers clone wars tanks and gunships that are just the right scale for the games I play with the Fubar rules. I'm having the most fun with this setup after watching the Clone Wars cartoons and then playing out the land battles. We just have 2 armies the Grand Army of the Republic (Clones) and the Confederation of Independent Systems (Droid army).

Lee33722 Sep 2015 9:56 p.m. PST

Is anyone making or proxing tanks or armor for the rebels to fight the empire in their games?
