This, of course most likely won't make that much sense to the readers of TMP outside the UK. Or perhaps it will.

Whilst The Archers and The Archers Omnibus is, most likely, the very bedrock of UK society I have long thought that Archers Extra was nothing more than the excuse required to rename BBC7 as BBC4 Extra. I have never listened to it. Why would I ? It features the silent characters from The Archers. Wouldn't that make for a rather dull program ? I can only presume (as I haven't listened) that it is 15 minutes of reflective silence. Mayve it isn't. Who knows ? Maybe you do ? Maybe you don't ? Maybe you do but will pretend not to know? Maybe you do not know but will pretend that you do ? Who can say ? Only, dear TMP reader, your very selves (and I don't say that lightly).

So – have you ever heard Archers Extra ?

Yes

No

Yes, occasionally. It's got backstories to the everyday stories of countryfolk.

Matt and Clive have a theft/insurance scam on the go at the minute.

Earlier Alice was shagging a fellow student at uni. It didn't end well.

Oh.

I have just discovered that I didn't want to know that.

Poor stupid trusting Chris. Other than having unfortunate parents that condemn him to a life of dismal dissapointment what has he ever done wrong ? Still darling Jehnny will be pleased.

Do they crowbar in topical events as well ?

Not so much.

I stop my ears, I unplug my mouse, never ! Never ! Never shall I click on "listen again" for ye abomniable tale of coubntry folk that be Archers Extra.

Thanks anyway.

Have you ever wondered why it's called "listen again" ? When I use it, 97.329% of the time it's for something I haven't heard before…..so how can I "listen again" ? It be a BBC Paradox.

Last time I was in the UK, I think you had three channels--maybe four. BBC, ITV 1, and ITV 2. I think. It was a few years back [1975]. Of course that was one more than we had had in North Dakota.

We're talking radio here GDN, not telly. And in 1975 the UK had three TV channels – BBC 1, BBC 2 and ITV.

Thanks anyway.

Ah, give it a shot. You might like it evil grin

Have you ever wondered why it's called "listen again" ?

If it's on Radio 4 Extra you can bet your boots you've heard it before. Sometimes ad nauseam.

Blimey is that still going-is Walter still in it?

Walter died years ago, as did his son Nelson.

Archers Extra is the new edgey spinoff aimed at trying to get reasonable listener numbers for BBC4Extra (the "new" name for Digital Radio BBC7)

Connard Sage19 Nov 2011 8:29 a.m. PST

Nelson Gabriel was also Count Duckula's Igor. :)

And he was the Governor in The Man Who Would Be King.

He was also Theoden in the BBC adaptation of Lord of the Rings.

I enjoyed the first series of Archers Extra, not so much this one. I am currently enjoying the re-runs of Sherlock Holmes though, Clive Merrison plays the part exactly as I imagine it. And the Smiley series was superb.

This is the saddest aspect of changing jobs.

My previous post had a great deal of travelling either between sites or from sites home again where as my current role means I can be home before it starts and for some reason I always seem to miss listening at my desk / living room.

Imagine my shock when I found the Nigel scream before I heard about the fall!
