Well the settlement is done.

TMP link

But now I need a name for it.
The rough background is that a ship full of folks from Earth (which is now a right dump) clubbed together to get all they needed to settle on the planet.
However the ship crashed and they lost almost all of their stuff and ended up making the escape pods into shelters and hull plates into walls.
Many of them died as did the captain and some of the crew.

They are quite a bit off course too due to the crash.
However they all decided to play with the cards they were dealt by fate and set up home here.

So names could be based around the original location (which was quite wooded and watery), maybe in honour of those that died, maybe something that reflects the stoic nature of the settlers.
Maybe something else?

Any ideas?

'Last Hope'

'New Hope'

You could have a town sign for either of the above where some sinic has put a line through the first word and painted 'No' above it…

I was toying with a name that had Hope in it you know.

Great minds and all that.
Still not sure though..

If it's really FUBAR, how about Europa…?

Oh no, Shedman wins – you've got a bloke wandering off with a load of copper wire; that's definitely Stevenage….

Mark Plant25 Oct 2011 3:19 a.m. PST

If you call it Hope, then residents can say "I live in Hope"!

And others can say about a nearby spot, "It's beyond Hope"!

I prefer, since they are just putting up with the cards they have been dealt, "Bad Deal".

In light of the origin of the wall, how about Keysville

This is interesting:

However, my suggestion would be to use the Latin or Greek of whatever word you feel best describes their outlook.

Greek examples:

Elpis – Hope
Atychos – Unlucky
Erimos – Deserted, all-alone

I also like the name "Icarus", from Greek mythology, as most people will associate it with a tragic falling short of original hopes and goals.

Perhaps something along the purpose of the camp?…a unique geographical location?…or Corporate/Government title?

What was the name of the ship?

*****

Diamond Falls, Salt Flats, Ironwood Forest (nearby geographic location)…Camp Diamond, Outpost Salt Flats, Ironwood?

The Independence (ship) so perhaps Camp/Oupost Independence?

*****

Or the over all look of the camp?

Looks a bit like turtles or a turtle nest…maybe Turtle Cove, Tortuga, etc.

Like.

What was the name of the ship?

The Marco Polo

grin

TheCaptainGeneral25 Oct 2011 9:49 a.m. PST

Sticking with computer terms, You could call the camp 'Home Row' and the former starship Qwerty or Kwerty…

Did you intentionally leave the "U" key out of the picture?

Ha ha, I never noticed that before.

FUBAR of course! :D

Cacique Caribe25 Oct 2011 10:19 a.m. PST

The Marco Polo?

Hmm. Now I've gotta put my brain to work a bit.

Dan

Angel Barracks25 Oct 2011 10:22 a.m. PST

Here are a few ideas that sprang to mind:

Sherriff – he wrote the play Journey's End

Hamptons Rest – named after captain Hampton of The Marco Polo

Venice – Marco Polos home town.

So you can see how my train of thought is working.

"Tritium Springs" ?

Now i know what to do with my collection of Fruit Shoot caps ( was going to file down and use as vents).
I've been on a build of my own and my top bits of junk are:

Tops from TicTac boxes (UK confectionary) can be used to make some very sturdy looking doors-and the offcut as a generic boxy panel to stick to a building.

The tops of Dulux sample emulsion-would make a great communal building in a build like this.

The plastic fittings that go on tacs made to secure wires to skirting board-various sizes-make nice doors with a bit of a Tatooine feel to them.

Anyone else care to share some junk" tips?
