Here is my conundrum. Do i collect an actual order of battle or a theatre? Do i just mix and match what appeals to me? I love the units of the Carlist centre army but prefer the ISA troops that fought against the Northern Theatre. Also i like the ex-Argelinos in the Carlist army. Why do i get so hung up on historical oobs? :) FM |

I nearly always collect armies around historical obs, it gives me a focus for the collection and it provides a depth of background which adds an additional layer of fun. However this method will occasionally prevent the purchase of a particularly desirable unit. Raglan |

theatre, no question whatsoever..and the pretty ones first..one of the mist common Prussian SYW units seen on the table is IR 40..and in reality one of the worst performing..but very pretty in its rose facings and small clothes.. |

I sometimes collect figures for particular battles or OBs but for Carlist War I have a fantasy army. There are too many interesting units not to have them all. |

If you do the early part of the war, say the first 18 months to 2 years you are going to be looking at a fantasy looking force for your Carlists if you use regular troops and uniforms for it anyway from what I've read. Zumalacarregui was constantly short of even shoes for his troops. Clothing was difficult to obtain for them. It is likely that they were not very uniformed. Isabellino forces operating against them faced similar supply problems as the campaign went on. The further they penetrated into the Basque provinces the more difficult it was to supply the army with provisions, replacement equipment and so forth. A main thrust of Zumalacarregui's strategy was to capture these supply columns as they were moving to the liberal army. I'd say paint the units you want, especially for the Carlists. It will make the painting faster and you can expand it later so that you have both OOBs. |
