Well, strictly speaking now, you know, you have heard of it though, you know, – it's mentioned in the poll title. grin

Don't knows are encouraged to find out – otherwise we'll have 20 variations on "don't know" grin

ochoin deach12 Oct 2011 5:07 p.m. PST

Is it like vegemite?

Sergeant Paper12 Oct 2011 6:03 p.m. PST

To make your own, from:
link

Servings: 6

Ingredients:
200 g anchovies, drained & coarsely chopped
2 tablespoons fresh white breadcrumbs
150 g butter
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 pinch ground cinnamon
1 pinch freshly ground nutmeg
1 pinch ground mace
1 pinch ground ginger
1 dash fresh ground black pepper (good twist)

Directions:
1) Using a mortar and pestle, pound the anchovies and butter until they resemble a smooth paste. You could also use a food processor.
2) Stir in the breadcrumbs, spices and pepper and spoon the paste into a large ramekin. Cover and chill before serving.
3) Serve with scrambled eggs, toast, sandwiches and as a "kick" to savoury sauces!

Yep, just like I thought, Peppermint Patties.

No 5 day old dead cat? So it isn't the same as vegemite.

It is, without doubt, a more refined choice.

Prior to this poll, I never heard of the stuff. Now I get to outrage my better half by making some this weekend. Ya gotta love TMP!

Klebert L Hall14 Oct 2011 6:06 a.m. PST

Probably, though I've never had it.
I like most stuff.

You mean Nouc Mam?

brass115 Oct 2011 8:06 a.m. PST

Not even close to Nuoc Mam. I have seen any number of recipes for this substance but the down-home way to make it goes something like this:

chop up a bunch of fish

put them in a jar

add whatever spices you have lying around, plus vinegar if you have it, otherwise use whatever rice-based moonshine you've been brewing in the abandoned wing-tank out back

seal the jar, bury it, and leave it buried until the fish have rotted

unseal the jar, carefully pour off the top few inches of liquid for your own use, and give the rest to people you don't like and will probably never see again

Hmmm … I always assumed that Mrs Greater had a fairly high level of tolerance for the gross and malodorous but I could conceivably be wrong.

Brass,
From your description, it sure sounds like nouc mam.

brass116 Oct 2011 9:29 a.m. PST

Close, maybe, but it lacks Eagle Three-Star Rice Brandy (the generic name for homemade hooch that can eat a plastic canteen) and lengthy underground decomposition.

Is it like vegemite?

Never had vegemite – does it contain anchovies ? If not then no, nothing like vegemite.

Peppermint Patties???

never had Peppermint patties – but I beleive they are some kind of chocolate and peppermint sweet confection, so no, nothing like "Patum Peperium – the gentleman's relish" which is savoury.

And has (to my knowledge) the unique amongst food substances instruction to "use sparingly".
