I thought it was a bit of a poor effort from one of my favourite authors. Cornwell got me into historical fiction and I'm a huge fan of his arthurian, heretic, ACW and viking series.

My thoughts are that it lacks characters who you care about – probably the most fundamental aspect of any novel. The action is ok but I thought the subject matter was fairly minor and relatively insignificant compared to many of his other ventures. Seemed like a novel written for his personal benefit and interest in a piece of historical minutiae rather than the readerships.

If you love the AWI and love Cornwell you'll probably like it, otherwise, read something else from the frankly vast pantheon of historical fiction which has arisen over the last 5-10 years as a result of Cornwell's success.

I always found Iggulden's books particularly good, especially his Caesar and Genghis Khan novels.

I've not read it. The plot line does not appeal. I like many other Cornwell books though. (Hmm, more or less what Samulus said then.)

BTW. This should be on the "18th Century Duscussion" board, not Napoleonic!

I read this on my Kindle. It was a good diversion on a cross-country trip. The plot was certainly less silly than some of the more far-out Sharpe novels since it was based on historical events.

It was pretty good, I thought. An interesting story of a relatively unknown campaign. I hope he writes another book featuring Moore.

I enjoyed it. Certainly written in a different style to his other books. Not the same sort of thing as Sharpe or Uhtred, but a good read.
