Spanish or Russian? Which civil war do you prefer to wargame (if either)?

anleiher05 Oct 2011 11:27 a.m. PST

Spanish Civil War. Still murky in terms of good guys versus bad guys, but better equipment.

Grand Duke Natokina05 Oct 2011 11:34 a.m. PST

RCW. I like the great cavalry sweeps.

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP05 Oct 2011 11:37 a.m. PST

Russian – Spanish Civil War is a bit depressing – also no Cossacks!

Schogun05 Oct 2011 11:39 a.m. PST

RCW. All the WWI fun without the trenches. And like Grand Duke says, sweeping cavalry!

mad monkey 105 Oct 2011 11:40 a.m. PST

SCW.

John the Greater05 Oct 2011 12:29 p.m. PST

RCW. Cavalry and Vodka!

Of course the red wines of Spain are fine, too.

Fat Wally05 Oct 2011 12:29 p.m. PST

SCW every time. You have a long way to go to find a more messed up conflict.

ComradeCommissar05 Oct 2011 12:31 p.m. PST

Both!

DinOfBattle205 Oct 2011 1:27 p.m. PST

RCW if you want the most interesting terrain, personalities, and armies.

David Manley05 Oct 2011 1:31 p.m. PST

SCW – sunnier :)

bruntonboy05 Oct 2011 1:35 p.m. PST

SCW better tunes.

6sided05 Oct 2011 2:26 p.m. PST

RCW, just better in all respects for gaming scope.

SCW. More windmills to charge. Empress figures. Matches the terrain and buildings I already have.

SCW.

RCW never really appealed for some reason, although I'll play with other peoples toys.

Captain dEwell06 Oct 2011 4:38 a.m. PST

Aubrey, I think you'll find the Carlist Requettes wear raspberry berets . . . it's just soooo 1980s!

Gennorm06 Oct 2011 4:55 a.m. PST

RCW – the most interesting civil war there has been.

Patrick Sexton Supporting Member of TMP06 Oct 2011 7:03 a.m. PST

Interesting answers so far. A little background on the poll question.

Two months back I knew very little about either war. Then I got reading on and bought the rules to A Very British Civil War. Since those were largely inspired by the SCW that got me interested in researching that period.

I just returned from Prague where they have a great WW1 military museum which also naturally features equipment and uniforms featured in the RCW which interested me greatly.

Since its a birthday month for me, if I was going to delve into a new obsession, I though I'd let TMP poll respondents help me out with this one.

Ive also picked up the necessary Peter Pig Rule & Army books as well as the associated Osprey books in the mean time. I probably will end up doing both over time, it just a matter of which I do first at this point!

Thanks for the good input and keep the answers coming!

U.K.

PS. by my count, its RCW 8, SCW 10 so far! (discounting "both" answers").
;-)

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP08 Oct 2011 10:17 p.m. PST

Well, read the Osprey "Essential" histories for both periods and it looks like its SCW to start with, though I'm sure I'll still do RCW at some point too.

Thanks all again for input!

U.K.

Captain dEwell09 Oct 2011 5:28 a.m. PST

I recommend read, or listen to, George Orwell's 'Homage to Catalonia', there is plenty of interest within to help create and understand the forces of the communists and anarchist militias. Very helpful for me.

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP09 Oct 2011 5:15 p.m. PST

Thanks Captain, as it happens their is a kindle edition available at a decent price so Ive picked it up.

Cheers!

Spanish Civil War. It has elites vs masses Franco's Spanish Foriegn Legion vs militias; veterans vs veterans; quirky tanks; and an infantry assault on a (drydocked) naval destroyer. I also knew some Abraham Lincoln vets, and have marched with Families and Friends of the Abraham Lincoln brigade.
