If you game the Seven Years War, regardless of which continent, what is your must game battle?

Though I havent gamed it yet, and currently own no 7YW minis, if I ever get around to it, it will be Lobositz for me. It was the first 7YW battle I ever saw wargamed as a child and it stuck with me.

Yours?

There are a number I've never played, but I'm currently working on the units for Kolin. On the surface, it doesn't read like Frederick can do well, but I've had a number of gamers say that a wargame of the battle is much more interesting and either side can win. Sounds fun to me!

Erik

2nd place is Zorndorf. That is one battle that has me fascinated.

Rich Bliss03 Oct 2011 3:18 p.m. PST

Have done Lobositz. Am now also working in Kolin.

Probably Kolin, but Leuthen and Hockkirk are interesting in their own way

Blake Walker03 Oct 2011 4:48 p.m. PST

I've done Minden several times. Leuthen would be interested to do. Alas, I have no Prussian. Only British, Hessians, Hanoverians, French, Saxons, and now am painting up Austrians.

The Teddy Bears' Picnic.

I've played Lobositz twice to a conclusion. I usually prefer much smaller battles for wargaming, but Lobositz is doable because only the vanguards of the armies fought.

Another vote for Lobositz, with Minden a close second.

Kloster Campen, 1760. Personnal project, my ancestor was wounded there. Close fight, gorgeous units (white French with different types of red, violet, black and white facings, Fisher corps, red English and Hannoveraners, kilted highlanders, blue Hessian, some prussian hussards). Very gallant deeds from both sides, enough documentation to wargame well, medium sized battle easy to play with figures, nice terrain (village, marsh, canal, small woods, bridge).

Kolin with Zorndorf being a close second

Torgau. First XVIII century boardagame I played (F.Chadwick GDW, 1974). My long-standing wargame and research project since 1995.

Kunersdorf..though I am planning Mollwitz as a display game

If I have to choose just one it would have to be Kolin.

Battle of Wandiwash (Vandavasi)in India. A small battle but with a mix of European, Sepoy and native troops on both sides.

Louisbourg or Quebec. My clan's regt--the 78th Highland Regt of Foot, Fraser's Highlanders--participated in them.

1 vote for Minden!

John Clements04 Oct 2011 1:16 p.m. PST

I agree with the comments about Kolin, having fought it as a club game at a show many years ago. It is not at all obvious to the onlookers who is going to win and it can go either way. Although my own interests have moved to the WAS, this remains one of my favourites so I'll vote for it. Minden is my favourite western theatre battle. Again, that can be won by the actual losers and there are a lot of variables that can tip the balance.

Patrice04 Oct 2011 1:37 p.m. PST

The battle of Saint-Cast, because it is in my area and I heard much about it and I have visited the place but of course it was a small local battle and not very interesting for other people.

Hastenbeck. The French WIN!! I know, amazing.

It would have to be Regimental too, not Brigade-based.

freecloud05 Oct 2011 2:56 a.m. PST

Always liked Warburg, it makes a nice big-table game in 25mm.

Mr Voltaire05 Oct 2011 5:46 a.m. PST

Altefritz, I always thought Torgau would be a Bleeped text to wargame effectively, so I will peruse your blog about it with interest!

spontoon05 Oct 2011 8:30 a.m. PST

Are we including the WAS? If so, then Fontenoy.

Altefritz06 Oct 2011 2:16 a.m. PST

Dear Voltaire

(funny enough, Altefritz chatting with Voltaire…), I designed the scenario for Volley and Bayonet, borrowing a lot from Chadwick boardgame.

I am planning a scenario-test with some friends in the late 2011. I'll post the result on the blog.

I agree with you that without some special rules restraining Lacy corps movement, the battle looks pretty bleak for the prussian.
