This was sent to me by a fellow Wargamer: Thought you would like to read this. This is from my nexus yahoo group wings of war (WWI aircraft.) The same people (in Italy) who came out with the planes are going to come out with 1:1200 PAINTED ships of the Napoleonic period. Also might cover an earlier period, from 1650. Interesting? Can't wait till next Summer. Wonder what the price will be? The planes are $12.00 USD to &16.00 each and are now hard to find. Think they will be 4 groups of 3? Lots to wonder about. And PAINTED!!!! ------------------------------------------------------------ Sails of Glory Sails of Glory will recreate the pitch clashes between ships in the age of sail (1650 – 1815). Just like Wings of Glory, a tactical game where they will be deployed predipinte miniatures of boats of past centuries in scale 1/1200, sailing the seas to each other thanks to a system of maneuver cards similar to what we know well, after many years of air duels between biplanes. Similar but not identical: recreate the challenges in the seas and play the difficulties linked to navigation required a complete rehabilitation. "The distinct personality and behavior deeply different of a great ship compared to an airplane of the twentieth century have allowed us to reinvent the game and find innovative ideas, but keeping it consistent with logic and the principles that have inspired Wings of Glory" says Andrea Mainini, co-author of Sails of Glory. The first series of models, which will see its debut in the summer of 2012, Napoleonic-era ships will play, but if the game will have the success hoped for, it is very likely that these will follow the boats of other historical periods such as the age of discovery, the middle ages and antiquity. In fact, the Wings of Glory has lent for years to unofficial adaptations to other worlds, by fans around the world. Intents related to thought by Andrea Angiolino, co-author of the original system, which States "since the first publication of" Wings of War "were convinced that the game system was also used in other settings." The author never did mystery variants spread network enthusiasts, indeed we have seen recently involved in an attempt to list them all (on this page). Sails of Glory is the first official product that has developed together with Andrea Mainini with an emphasis on playability, the historical accuracy and attention to detail thumbnails like the Wings of War/Wings of Glory that realized together with Pier Giorgio Paglia. With this move the fledgling Ares Games continues to fuel expectations of buying players from around the world (after the first two recent announcements of the new edition of the war of the ring and system Wings of Glory) but also shows that they do not want to limit its production under titles "orphans" NGI disappearance. From here to the summer of 2012 we expect new details and previews about ships that attraccheranno on our game tables (which unfortunately are not yet available images), but we advise you to stay tuned on our pages, your favorite editing has already embarked to discover all the details to know about this exciting new publishing project. Expect one of our usual scoop! |

I'd go for it. Been trying to do Sail for 20 years now. (started with Wooden Ships and Iron Men.) I'd do it big time. |

Always wanted to learn to play WSaIM correctly. I was "taught" by some jerks that were power gamers
ruined it for me and I didn't touch sailing games for almost 20 years

No news for a while now. I can't see it coming out this year though I hope I'm wrong. I'm intending to buy the models if they are reasonable to play an adapted game of WS&IM. |
| Lion in the Stars | 09 Apr 2012 9:52 a.m. PST |
Nothing on the Ares games website indicating it's anywhere near production, and no news since that last article I linked. |

I suspect they have got their hands full with trying to get the WW1 aircraft back in the stores. They said April for the big bombers and there's no indication that they will meet that date. |

I am really interested in this one. I am active in Age of Sail and played most major rules out there. The chart driven mechanics often bog down play in almost all rule sets. It is hard to simulate the technical detail of ship movement and fire because it is complex. I see cards as the best way to simplify the complexity. Read the card and make the move/fire. As I own enough ships to fight all the major battles from the SYW on I am disappointed that you need to buy the ships to get the rules. I would be interested in the cards and ship data cards. |

Try Beat to Quarters 4.0.1 rules, which are available for free, on the internet, with a little searching. Great fun, easy to learn and play, and give a decent result for single, ship vs. ship actions, or full fleet battles. Enjoy! |

I would have though sails of canvass would be more useful, but I'm a land lubber, so what do I know |
| Timmo uk | 14 Apr 2012 7:24 a.m. PST |
Dantheman I'm not sure you would need to buy the ships to get the rules unless I've miss read something. If they follow the Wings of War (now Glory) model there will be rules sets available with and without models. I'm sure you wouldn't have much trouble selling the ships anyway. Although I've not much wargames fund at the moment I can't wait to see these as I want to try out a new rigging method on them. |

I missed Salute today where I understand they were running trials of the new ARES game Sails of Glory Any one have a go? Any Pics? Are the models 1/1200 scale as suggested and are they pre painted? Thanks in anticipation rabbit |
| Charlie 12 | 20 Apr 2013 2:08 p.m. PST |
rabbit- The ships are 1/1000 (not 1/1200) and will be prepainted. What over-the-top price they're going to gouge people for them is anybody's guess. |
Uesugi Kenshin | 20 Apr 2013 5:54 p.m. PST |
Id be in for AWI battles. Maybe only a ship or two per side. That's all I could afford! |
| rabbit | 21 Apr 2013 12:39 p.m. PST |
@ Coastal, Thanks, I was hoping to use Langton or Navwar to get around the costs, just like do for Wings of W looks like they expected that thanks anyway rabbit |

I didn't play at salute but watched a partial game and picked up a ship that was sunk. The ships are big but look kinda cheap. The sails particularly are plastic and look it. I was disappointed in how they look considering the aircraft look so good. That said the game looks fun except the ships move very slowly. Cheers Joe |
| admrobbo | 28 Apr 2013 11:11 a.m. PST |
I too was at Salute ans had the same conclusions re cheapness, however when I asked, they were keen to inform everyone that they only had the prototype and final version will be better. Sails were I painted etc in the version they had. Final version will be fully painted, but still plastic. |
| admrobbo | 28 Apr 2013 11:13 a.m. PST |
Sorry
iPad spell check trauma !!! Sails were unpainted in the prototype . |

I am not sure why these are not shipped and out by now. I looked at their Kickstart page and they made TRIPLE the money they needed and stated they would ship by early April. I would like to see how they look etc. Clif |
| poiter50 | 17 May 2013 9:28 p.m. PST |
I think you will find that the Kickstarter funding period finished in April 2013 and sending of pledged pieces was occurring in Aug 2013. |
| Lion in the Stars | 17 May 2013 10:11 p.m. PST |
I looked at their Kickstart page and they made TRIPLE the money they needed That's barely a successful kickstarter
Even the Monster Hunters International RPG cleared that mark! |
