Now, I really like the idea of being able to track packages, and getting an email from a seller to notify you that your package has shipped is just cool.

But I get these "notification" emails (always involving the US Postal Service) that are just annoying, because if you click on the link, it just says:

The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper on September 29, 2011 to expect your package for mailing. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date.

What good does that do me? Just email me when the package actually ships, OK?

(I'm not griping at the merchants, but at the US Postal Service for the way they've set this system up.)

And I received an email from another merchant, telling me that my package had shipped via FedEx and that I should expect it in a week. The funny thing was, the package had arrived two days ago… huh?

So the USPS paid some egghead to program their computers to send that out, but then say they have to scale back operations because they can't afford it anymore. They've been operating in the red for decades. What's changed all of a sudden?

I hear you!

USPS tracking is a known joke. By the time the info is entered into the system, the package is already on my door step three days later. Why even bother?

I had a package sent to me by USPS last November from NYC. The tracking number said that it was sent from Milwaulkee in September.

That message is actually generated when the merchant uses the USPS's on-line, print-your-own-postage-stamp *& label service.

Basically the merchant inputs the weight, destination etc, the USPS computer tells him how much, charges his credit account & sends you a notification. The merchant then prints the mailing label, sticks it on your parcel & delivers the parcel to the USPS when he gets round to it. At that point the USPS guy scans the parcel & you can find out when it was actually handed to them, and theoretically where it is.

The older system didn't do the e-mail OR tracking – I've paid for air and had parcels put in surface mail (3 months +) because no one read the label.
