I've posted details of the civilianised variants of the Old Crow Provider and Legion vehicles that I developed as a personal (non-commercial) project as a spin-off of the 3D designs that I did for Jez.

Wow! Love that middle vehicle…you should have Jez sell that! I'd buy several in a heartbeat.

I second MRC's comment. it would make a excellent command vehicle. would like it in 15 and 6 mm.

AVAMANGO26 Sep 2011 9:20 a.m. PST

Agreed Oldcrow should produce the middle vehicle it would make a great mobile HQ.

A quick correction to my first post. I don't want there to be any confusion. I should have used the phrase "…..a spin-off of the 3D modelling that I…" – not "….of the 3D designs that…". I only realised after the post became uneditable. Just to make it clear Jez designed the original Provider and Legion. I created 3D models of them for him to use for printing in any scale he wanted.

I then designed a new cab for the Provider (above), additional central sections for the Legion (the rear 3 in the model above), and then I got Shapeways to print the whole models in 15mm (except the Provider chassis and wheels). The full info is in my website post.

Apologies for any confusion,

Andrew

I would love to have the "civilian" cabs for the Provider.

Nicely done, Andrew.

I think Jez does sell the Legion in 25mm, but isn't it only at shows?

All of them are pretty awesome

AVAMANGO26 Sep 2011 11:42 p.m. PST

Ok so are there any plans from either Jez or yourself to get them in full production?

WJAL2127 Sep 2011 3:38 a.m. PST

As Jez has not managed to get the 25mm version on the website yet I dont imagine any 15mm version coming anytime soon.

Thanks for the positive comments. As for them being produced……

The variants were designed for my own gaming needs. I never planned on commercially releasing them myself. As they are derivative works of Jez's designs, even if I wanted to get into casting models, I would feel uncomfortable releasing them. I cannot comment on the rest of the Legion model.

However, I have given the printed originals (that I commisioned from Shapeways) to Jez, from which he made my casts. I have also said he was welcome to keep and use them in anyway he wished, with no strings or costs attached.

To make it clear, I wish it to be publicly known that I transfer all rights to the designs of

1) "civilian" Provider cab
2) Legion central section with doors
3) Legion central section with closed roof
4) Legion central section with open roof

to Jez Plumridge of Old Crow Models (with the CAD design files to be supplied to him as well, to enable reprints).

Whilst you might be able to persuade him to sell you casts from the moulds made from the Shapeways prints, complete with the surface problems, sorry I'm not sure what his plans otherwise for them would be.

On a positive note, all the future vehicles and fittings I'm working on are 100% my own, not derivatives of Jez's or anyone else's models. I will therefore be able to give a clearer picture of availability. Hopefully I'll be able to post pics of the first one in the next couple of days.

I've also changed my printing strategy in that I'm reverting to using the Shapeways "White Strong and Flexible" (WSF) material. It doesn't give as great a detail as the Frosted Ultra Detail (FUD) that I used for the above vehicles. Advantages are however that whilst the surfaces are slightly rough (with some layering) there is none of the additional printing problem banding/striping, it's stronger, and much cheaper.

If there is interest in any of the future items I post, then I'll look at making them as print efficient as possible. This means hollowing them out to minimise the amount of material used and therefore making the cost as cheap as possible.

I could then list them on the Shapeways site. From there you would be able to order them direct at cost price, with no additional charge/profit margin from me as the design work is part of my hobby, not work.

Thats really is exciting news about some new future releases Andrew. Ive used Shapeways in the past for a couple of mech miniatures that a friend and i put into production a few years ago. I hope the quality of their RPing has improved as the surface to the miniatures we had done just had rows and rows of laser lines were the miniature had been cut out, we also opted to use the White Strong and Flexible (WSF) needless to say these laser lines ran over alot of the very fine detail which took forever to clean up and to be honest i never want to do that amount of work on any miniature that i buy again.

There will always be layering on 3D printed models. No matter which technology a printer uses, they're all built up (or down) a layer at a time. The finest that I've managed to get printed is on a Envisiontec Perfactory at 60µm in x/y planes and 15µm in z plane.

It's the distance that you examine it from that makes the difference. Only in very bright directional light can you see the layers whilst holding it in your hand. Rubbing a nail across gives a hint of slight surface texture. Look at it through a close up USB microscope and you can see it;

and to show the size of the model, I enlisted the help of a well known character in Lego form;

Having had an offline conversation, I've adjusted my idea for future models. Some people have access to 3D printers at University or work, or prefer to use a different 3D Bureau to Shapeways. What I'll do is make a print ready STL file of each future model available as a free download. Anyone who wants one can get it printed at Shapeways or wherever they choose. Just for personal use, not for commercial resale. What do you think about that as an idea?

That is very generious of you, however personally i dont have any access to a 3D printer :( just out of curiosity is that the actual size of that buggy next to the Lego figure ?

A Buzzard HQ27 Sep 2011 1:43 p.m. PST

Yes the model was under the green lego dome (4 studs wide)! It's actually a 6mm prototype test print of an Old Crow Gecko scout car, that Jez now has.

As I'd originally worked on the designs for the Legion with Jez of Old Crow spcifically for the Slammers Crucible rules, I'm rather hoping very, very hard that – at some point soon – they will be available in a range of sizes and configurations for anyone to buy…

By whatever method!

I've got half a dozen army lists in the rules based around variants of that vehicle and I would seriously like to give players the option of building the armies 'properly', if you see what I mean.
